Bear and a Banjo

262

Bear and a Banjo is a new musical podcast that tells the incredibly tall tale of a band that time forgot. Although history may have left them behind, Bear and Banjo rubbed shoulders with some of the greatest musical icons in history—from Leadbelly and Sister Rosetta Tharpe to Little Richard and Bob Dylan— unwittingly influencing the course of 20th century Americana. All their adventures are meticulously archived and presented by Dr. Q, played by Dennis Quaid. Bear and a Banjo features an original soundtrack, produced by Oscar-winner T-Bone Burnett (O’ Brother Where Art Thou, True Detective), written and performed by series creator Jingle Jared & Grammy-winning songwriter Jason "Poo Bear” Boyd with original lyrics by Bob Dylan.

    Great show!
This show is like the quantum leap of rock ‘n’ roll. These two characters pop in whenever and wherever something’s about to happen, influence the right person and... history happens! The characters are a little over the top but, they’re so enjoyable I can’t wait for season 2. Dennis Quaid is terrific as usual and the music is awesome. Never thought I’d be looking forward to hearing more from the guy who writes for Justin Bieber ( he’s not the genre I like) but, Poo Bear can really rock in any style! I look forward to hearing more from Bear and Banjo!

Sadly misses the mark for me
I really wanted to like this, given the talent and premise. Unfortunately the storylines are disjointed and overly wrought. The music just doesn’t fit the genre or timeframe. Characters never develop fully or even really become likable. Season finale was a letdown. My takeaway is that it’s more of an ego project for Jingle Jared and Pooh Bear than a truly inspired drama. Production on some epis is fantastic and I really liked the live performance bonus. Strip away the overproduction and those songs are pretty good.

    New world for podcasts!
This is a blast! The history mixed with this amazing story, too bad the trolls are hitting this show, it is well worth the time. And the music is some of the best I’ve heard. Now I like Dillon!

    Simply stupid
Worst podcast I ever listened to. Bad voice casting and just plain stupid.

    Flop
Could have been awesome, but it’s not. Poorly done, bad story lines, under and over performed characters. Find myself losing interest after 2 minutes of the episodes. Unsubscribed.

    Clever, creative, enjoyable & MUSICAL
So clever, creative, enjoyable. It is a breath of fresh air and takes me to another world. After the nonstop noise of life, it’s lovely to escape to newly imagined history and all from a musical perspective. You guys are so talented and this podcast is just what I needed to take me out of time for a bit. Thanks especially for the song. I keep sharing it and can’t wait to hear the album!! GREAT JOB👍

    Whow....slow down Big Bear
If you make it passed the first few minutes of baby dance, the 3rd episode...I think you can handle anything. Or you might need mental check up. :) Love Dennis Quaid, which is why I started listening, but I'm sorry...I can't handle this at all. And I love music stories!

Not sure what everyone else is talking about
It tells you it’s a fictional story? I quite enjoy it. It reminds me of old radio shows from when you would listen to a new episode. I like the music, and I like how they acknowledge mental illness as well. So far I quite enjoy it. But I’m a fan of this style.

    Cringe or Creative?
I really can’t decide. It feels like a throwback radio drama, but it’s trying to be more serious than melodrama. That and the music references being too far fetched for the period it keeps me from buying in to the story. I really wanted to like it, but two episodes were enough.

    This is complete garbage
This podcast is the worst of the worst. The story makes no sense, the host is annoying and stupid, and this is very poorly executed. I recommend you do not listen to this podcast, unless you want your last two brain cells to die.

    Stupid
Don’t waste your time this is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard
  • Destructive Urges
    Overwrought
The premise seems interesting, but the execution feels pretty off. You have to really thread a needle to get this kind of thing right, and they don't.

    One long commercial for OneMedical
It's an okay story, with a heavy, lingering odor of pure contrivance to convince the listener that he/she needs mental health services. Mediocre blues, catchy musician names. Don't get raked in.

    Baby dance!!!
Wow what a fun 2nd episode! Makes me wonder if this stuff actually happened in history. Can’t wait for more episodes 🐻🐻🐻

    Finally something different!
Something besides another true crime podcast and it’s a breath of fresh air! First episode already has me hooked!

What a great concept and well executed
I love the idea of a this “Big Fish” esque story being intertwined with the greatest era in American musical history. The voice acting is well done and embodies the old time radio stories in such a great way. I am excited to hear more adventures of Bear and Banjo crossing paths with folk/blues icons like Lead Belly, Muddy Waters, and John Lee Hooker! I did feel the actual songs that were played seemed a bit out of context or anachronistic. With the era and the setting of the characters it just seemed a little odd that they’d be playing something that sounds closer to Alternative R&B than the music of the people they encountered but I guess that’s part of their quirkiness. Definitely worth a listen and looking forward to future episodes.
