This podcast app offers a much-needed second layer of analysis, providing a leftist critical framework for understanding current events and their origins. They excel at leveraging a diverse range of hosts and guests to deliver strong insights. While their engineering analysis of topics isn't deeply technical (though the production quality is great), they don't claim to be. Despite their well-earned insights, the hosts are humble enough to self-critique, a rarity among reviewers. Don't expect dense academic interviews or minute event breakdowns (it's a podcast, after all!). But if you're looking for thorough analysis with a noticeable (sometimes strong) comedic element, this podcast is for you.

This podcast has helped me understand the intimate relationship between domestic and foreign policy that has often been neglected from broader analyses of US politics. Danny and Derek’s dynamic works well, the news roundups are informative, and the show’s guests are usually really engaging interlocutors.

Danny and Derek bring honest and sober analyses of world affairs, history, and politics that is otherwise impossible to find in today’s media hellscape. Not always uplifting, but the way these two cut through the noise and bring together the best guests for discussion is bracing. Sadly the quality of guest is so high that it makes me spend too much money on academic texts I only ever half read.

I get all of my international news from alternative media, since the major press outlets are averse to any story outside of the west. AP has a great weekly news episode, and the bonus episodes are reliably stimulating and well thought out. Been subscribed to the premium show for a couple months now, and I’m really happy with it.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a reliably worse interviewer on a podcast than Danny, it’s actually kind of amazing how difficult it is for him to stop talking about himself and his own thoughts something so he can let them get their own across. Derek is more tolerable. The news recap episodes are good for a quick summation of fp news, and their politics are by and large good, but avoid guests like the plague

In a world where bias and manipulation is ubiquitous, this is one of my trusted sources of news nowadays. Oh and if logic and humanity is considered a bias, they they are guilty of it.

The normal episodes are just headline reads. No analysis.

My favorite show for world news and US foreign policy. Derik’s research and analysis keeps me up with the world in ways no other leftist news outlet does; the breadth of coverage is staggering and impressive. Danny’s contextualization of events through a historical material lens is refreshing and the humor is necessary and appropriately cynical.

Incredible insight. I know this is the pain of all podcast now is that ads have become standard but it will just lead the medium to crash eventually. Maybe podcasting is not meant to be a full time gig? Or even like a real “revenue stream”?

News roundup is a must listen every week, and the deep dives are informative and entertaining.

Their news segments allow me to keep up with the news sans propaganda and violence porn found in mainstream news outlets and social media coverage. Keeps me offline and still in touch.

Of the higher quality and most elevated of leftist pods. They like to have fun sometimes, but the meat and potatoes is news wrap ups and scholarly interviews.

I was wondering and worrying how my beloved fellows liberals could become so antisemitic. This is one of the answers. If anyone is interested in high quality reporting on geopolitics. Listen to battle lines by the telegraph. It’s much better and much more nuanced.

Bessner is wildly, unnecessarily confrontational with his guests, and the level of smug self-satisfaction he displays is intolerable even for someone who has spent most of his life in academia. I can’t believe anyone would willingly sit down with him for a coffee, much less an entire podcast episode. I rated this two stars because the guest was interesting.

This bonus episode was incomprehensible to non-scholars! What ever happened to a clear train of thought! Throwing out book titles was of no use to me. Save intense academic arguments for school. Remember the non-specialist!

Depending on the guests and host’s understanding of given topics, the episodes are 80% fluff + 20% substance or the reverse; more of the former.

Useful for a view into a far left progressive view of the world, but no actual foreign policy recommendations - just snarky commentary. General viewpoint is everyone is stupid, except for them.

Seems like everything is paywalled except the news segments recently. I used to subscribe, am taking a break from podcast subs currently (had too many, it gets outta control quick). I get that podcasts need to make money sometimes, but now they’re doing paid promotions in the free episodes and it’s a bit icky. Do the subscription model or the ads model, not both… 5 stars though to anyone reading this trying to get the vibe of the show, it’s a great podcast and they put out tons of content. This is just the only place I can leave this feedback for free.

really want to love the show, but can’t get over how smugly Danny Bessner treats guests, particularly female guests. the guy is convinced of his superior reasoning, often to the detriment of the listener. needs to spend more time listening and less time interrupting and pushing back. I really like Derek a lot though

I would love to listen to this podcast more but the most interesting episodes are behind their Patreon. I have no problem supporting this podcast at some point but I don’t really feel ready to support a podcast when I only hear 3 minute clips at a time…

A excellent source for world history and world affairs with good humor but informative. The substack is a great way to educate yourself about the world.
