Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard

Comedy #40

Hi, I’m Dax Shepard, and I love talking to people. I am endlessly fascinated by the messiness of being human, and I find people who are vulnerable and honest about their struggles and shortcomings to be incredibly sexy. I invite you to join me as I explore other people’s stories. We will celebrate, above all, the challenges and setbacks that ultimately lead to growth and betterment. What qualifies me for such an endeavor? More than a decade of sobriety, a degree in Anthropology and four years of improv training. I will attempt to discover human “truths” without any laboratory work, clinical trials or data collection. I will be, in the great tradition of 16th-century scientists, an Armchair Expert.

    Monica is Unbearable
Overall, the podcast is pretty good. But, Monica is such a distraction, grating and annoying and adds little to nothing to the podcast. It’s difficult to listen to an entire episode with her.
  • Smart palate
Monica has ruined this for me.
LOVE Dax! Love Rob. LOVE THE AUTHENTIC CONNECTION DAX MAKES W THE GUESTS. BUT Monica is unbearable, unpalatable, vapid, irritating, cluless, shallow and truly the most unqualified host for this otherwise intelligent and thoughtful podcast. I wish someone in a position of power, would READ the plethora of negative reviews about Monica and replace her with a more likable, more informed adult!!!. She’s a petulant child who has managed to RUIN AE for me. My insides cringe when she speaks, interrupts, whines, uses her baby voice, and most offensive the infamous FAKE (Wanna be Dax) laugh. The “I must have every expensive, limited, love of clothing” is so gross. She doesn’t care or know if it’s attractive, if it says “limited edition” “vintage” or “THE ROW” Monica MUST have it. She thinks this is cute. It’s not. It’s GROSS. She tried to throw Dax under the bus anytime he purchases “a bus” in an attempt to take the focus off of herself… but it doesn’t work. Sorry Monica. Bottom line, She adds NOTHING to the show but she is very successful at detracting from it. She manages to insert her needless reactions at the most inopportune times, which disrupts the flow between Dax and guest. Please Monica, if you insist on being in the room, just Shhh the grownups are talking. 🤫

    Egomaniac
The host is very out of touch with his own reality. Also he is addicted to Instagram and the butt kissing comments. Please everyone stop commenting on his Instagram to feed his ego and narcissism.

    Changed my life
Not only has this quickly become my favorite podcast, it has truly changed my life for the better. In the episode with Nikki Glaser she mentioned how the book Stop Drinking Now, by Allen Carr helped her up stop drinking. I read it, and was able to give up alcohol with any discomfort. Then the episode about narcissists led me to read the guest’s book, It’s Not You, which is helping me to heal from my marriage with a narcissist. Thank you Dax and Monica from the bottom of my heart.

Somewhat entertaining but hosts not living in reality
This podcast can be entertaining but I really don’t think either host is living in our reality. There’s very little that is relatable.

    So good!!
Whenever my wife is telling a really long story, lol I think of how excited Monica and Dax were listening to us and I try to be more like that!! I’m mostly just listen to armchair anonymous every Friday Long road trip. It’s our favorite but the way your audience is so connected with you guys makes me so happy!! I love the show. You guys have a great guest and I hope You have a good weekend😎🙌🏾

    Great listen!
I absolutely love Monica. She provides a balance and insight that deserves to be heard, and everyone who is saying otherwise is unwilling to hear an important perspective that gives this podcast its unique ability to touch so many people. Thank you Monica and Dax!

    Dax is the best!
Monica is also wonderful and this pod makes me feel like we’re friends—I love how much I learn and I love how approachable and open you both are. Smart, accomplished and capable hosts who are (as best I can tell) so receptive and endlessly teachable! The guests you bring on are people who would not have ended up on my radar otherwise and my world has expanded because of it. Special thanks to Dax for being a model of someone in a place of privilege who seizes the opportunity to recognize the luck of and appreciate his charmed life and uses his ability to shine a light on ways most dudes can follow to be better dudes. Your humility and gratitude is wonderful to behold. Thank you

    Long Covid is Real
I really enjoy this podcast, for the most part, but when I listened to the Suzanne O’Sullivan episode, my blood was boiling. If you’ve never known someone to have become chronically ill after having had COVID then you should not be completely dismissive of it. Many of us were highly functioning people with families, jobs, hobbies, who have been forever changed by this crippling disease. I’ve heard of relationships breaking up, friendships ending, people unable to work and losing their jobs, parents unable to take care of their children — all due to COVID. Suzanne O’Sullivan, we did not just come up with a label because we were lonely and had no one to talk to. I nearly went through the roof when O’Sullivan stated “There is really good evidence that most people, however, with long COVID probably didn’t get it related to the virus, but rather to the kind of idea of long COVID” — and many other infuriating statements. The fact that Dax and Monica were in agreement throughout this conversation was not fair to the people who are suffering and who continue to fight to be cared for, noticed and believed. You try having brain fog for five years, Monica, or fighting to breathe, or not being able to do the things you did prior to March 2020. Please do your research, go onto the many Long COVID FB Groups and read the heart-breaking posts, read the many articles written about Long COVID - the NYTimes recently published (March 12th) an article entitled: “A Clearer Picture of Covid’s Lasting Effects on the Body”. The fantastic science podcast, Ologies, has done a great job in describing the disease and providing validation for those friends, families, some podcasters and doctors who do not believe it to be real. For the estimated 400 million people who have Long COVID - it is real.

Charming, but still mired in misogyny
Dax Shepard is charming and funny while also stuck in toxic masculinity and misogyny. He tries hard, but he’s still problematic. I had to stop listening. The more he takes the Rogan route, the more harm he does while believing himself to be the smartest person in the room

    Eeeew. Andrew Schulz
I am such a fan of this podcast but really wish that Monica and Dax called out Andrew Schulz for interviewing a RAPIST. Why are we trivializing the fact that Donald Trump has been charged with rape? Giving a rapist a platform is not okay when you claim to love your wife and daughter, Andrew Schulz.

    Please change the editing
I don’t know what the deal is with the editing, but it really messes up the conversations. It’s like it’s trying to cut out any millisecond of dead air and it makes it seem so unnatural and like you’re cutting stuff out even though I don’t think you are. Btw, I appreciate Dax willing to voice both sides takes on stuff. The people giving 1 star reviews being over dramatic saying you can’t normalize certain people or opinions is mind blowing and gross to me. It’s like they want to silence conservative points of view or something. The irony is that the elitist moral superiority line of thinking is exactly why the 2025 election went the way it did. People have ideological differences and THAT IS FINE, in many cases nobody is “right” or “wrong”. Anyway, it’s a good show but please fix the editing stuff. That’s the main reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.

    I ❤️ Monica & Dax
Love the pod! Monica is a great counter balance to Dax. The show doesn’t work without her. Look forward to every episode!

    Obsessed with yourselves
Why do famous people need to make more and more shows interviewing other famous people? What is this dystopian world where the general population has nothing to say and will just consume anything the celebrity class produce? Are you guys just like obsessed with yourselves? Reminds me of SNL’s 50 anniversary show with an audience of only celebrities, rather than the common people who actually consume the show and keep the lights on. Tired of the narcissus class thinking we care to hear you hang w your other famous friends. I have my own friends I can hang out with who are just fine but too humble to make another stupid podcast about it.

Thank you thank you thank you for your top notch content. I love your fair, and well informed stance on complicated issues I can’t begin to express how much I’ve learned on subjects I never would have sought out for myself. You guys never disappoint! 🫶

    Please respect the AA Traditions
It is clear there is some great fervor and community-building with this network, but it is important to entirely divorce what you are doing from AA, for the integrity of that program. The work of AA service is an avocation, no one should be making money from their experience in recovery or sharing opinions with the public as a member, explicitly referencing the program. To avoid this, it is important to censor any references to AA before making these shows public, or not share last names, etc. The cat is out of the bag already, but I do think it is important to make this change going forward, to make sure the still suffering alcoholic can make it in. That is why the traditions exist.

    Horrible editing
The editing and removal of even a millisecond of a pause makes this podcast almost impossible to listen to. And I’m something that usually listens at 1.5 speed. I hope they change whatever they are doing

Love Dax, really not a fan of Monica
Dax is a great interviewer and I learn a lot by listening to the expert episodes. Podcast would be perfect but…Monica is whiny and always complaining about something. Not sure why she got this gig. It’s really hard to listen when she speaks.
  • Lkrieb79
    Generally fun, Monica is annoying
Generally fun insightful interviews with wide ranging guests. Monica can be incredibly annoying showing elitism when she puts on her political superiority cape and starts talking about how disenfranchised people are fools who don’t know what is good for them- but don’t worry SHE DOES. This mentality is gross and she really shows herself sometimes. TDS for sure. No one who vote for Trump is crying about it 1 month later. If you think that you are living in an echo chamber of your own opinion.
  • Riser87
    My ultimate fave.
Dax, I have loved you forever. Parenthood made me love you more, but this podcast is exceptionally good. I started a new job where ear buds are allowed and I can’t get enough. I loved Bateman, also my favorite guy ever. I loved the episode with RDJ, but today I listened to your mom. Probably my favorite and so relatable. She’s a GOAT and I love her. Thanks for being you and doing this podcast.

Monica has made listening so painful
Everytime she opens her mouth, I can’t help but cringe. I use to be so excited for any espisode to come out. As time has gone on, the more we get of Monica, the more she ruins it. I wish she could see her shortcoming and maybe figure out a way to somehow be better. Dax will have an amazing vibe with a guest, Monica opens her mouth and ruins it. I have a difficult out time seeing what good she brings to the show, when in fact she just brings it down. I find myself not even listening when people I love are on now.

    Dax Shepard Hates Neurodiversity
This show continues to spread extremely biased and uninformed (sometimes even dangerous) information about neurodivergent conditions. The last episode spark hundreds on social media to requests Dax to have actual experts on ADHD and Autism on the show that he continues to ignore. Dax seems to think only his dyslexia is a valid condition. He has no empathy for those who also struggled in different ways because their brains are also wired differently. Dax also chooses to perpetuate old fashioned stereotypes in a very dangerous time where our US government is trying to take away our supports and rights. I’ve listened from day 1 but I’m finally done with his complete ignorance on this topic.
  • SurferKitty
    Enjoyable
Update again: what’s up with the editing? So choppy. I was following along with Bradley Whitford, yes I’m behind, and all his stories were cut off or mixed one into the other. Fast and snappy is okay, but the quality loss is off the charts. Long time listener and I like the podcast, but I used to like it a whole lot more. Dax is great, the interviews are interesting, and i like Monica, but the fact check, which was once my favorite part of the show, I now fast forward through most of. When Monica starts pushing forward her baby voice and Dax encourages the behavior I just cringe with crawly skin. It’s so unpleasantly intimate that I occasionally wonder if Bell has raised an eyebrow about their relationship. It’s icky sticky and a bit of a turn off. I enjoy the friendship, I don’t enjoy the mutual aural cuddles.

    Monica hates men
I have been a long time listener and fan of armchair expert, and armchair anonymous for years. The March 10th episode with Lauren was amazing- Then the fact check left me with my mouth agape. Monica went from expressing how important a females voice is on a podcast with male listeners, to somehow switching into the people who voted for Trump are fools and our country is going to suffer. She also states this is a fact. Dax tries to explain to her how her opinion could be coming off as rude or entitled to the viewer, but she doubles down. The topic of her less than enthusiastic opinion of white males is brought up more than once in this show, and I think the irony does not go unnoticed that her career started in part if not a huge amount of the opportunities she was given, were from a white male. I’m really disappointed and will no longer be listening to this show.
  • Cazootle
    Fact check cringe
I quickly became a huge fan of the Anonymous segments but as I’ve started listening to the interviews, I find my opinion of Dax tanking. I’ve been a big fan of his for a long time and really enjoyed listening until I realized he was such a fence-sitter on important issues. Dax, what is happening? Fact checks are increasingly VERY defensive and cringey. Are you a closet conservative? I don’t get it. Really disappointed where this is going, especially in a time in our country where we really don’t need to be defending the things you’re defending. (Namely: JVN and Lauren Graham Returns)

    Man Hating Expert
Really enjoy the interviews, gives a good balance of information. I do want to say, I see what Dax is saying about all the men being hated on for the last 10 years. But to put it in perspective, women have been hated by men for thousands of years. So that’s probably why they aren’t getting much sympathy these days. Just a thought. Keep up the great conversations!

    Monica ruins the show
I have been a subscriber for YEARS like 7 years. I’m a conservative but I’ve always been open to Dax’s views. Monica is just so hateful but I’ve dealt with it for Dax. Today I’ve had enough. She was so disrespectful. No wonder she’s been single for years. She’s an angry and bitter. And no Monica I don’t regret my vote :)
  • ghost74592043
Love you all with one caveat
I LOVE this podcast and the fact check is one of the greatest parts but…when Dax and Monica start fighting over a topic I turn it off and don’t go back. I can’t imagine a ton of people like to listen to the two of them fight.
  • slickrick624
Dax is a fact check hijacker
I’ve always loved the banter between the two of you but don’t introduce Monica’s factcheck and then argue everything she says or somehow find a way to turn the conversation to you. This has been the last good majority of fact checks now and it’s getting a little tiring. It doesn’t even sound like Dax has his own opinion, more so just has to argue for the sake of arguing. If it felt organic it’d be one thing but lately it just feels old and tiring.

    Ted Seger’s production
Hey Monica and Dax, I have no idea how else I’d get in touch with you about this Dax so decided to leave a review, which I know you read because you actually mentioned one of mine from one of the synced reviews I put in. I am a plant manager of a high speed aseptic beverage manufacturer on the east coast and have been in manufacturing my entire career. I love the message, values, and passion you have for Ted Seger’s. If there’s ever any questions you have or if I could help in getting you connections (if you don’t have them already) for the production of your brand further please reach out! I’d love to help this cause in any way that I could! Thanks for all you guys do.
  • KBW99
    Out of touch
From fact check: Dax’s support of Joe rogan as “comedian” first and saying that people judge him on his 15 controversial guest was UNHINGED. He spouts conspiracy theories and PLATFORMS bigots, racists and LIARS. He’s not a journalist so he’s PLATFORMING hate. You can’t judge him based on that?? This show has changed a lot since it became successful and it’s much worse on Wondery now. Listening to Dax be so center-right and “both sided” on every issue has become intolerable. His “empathy” has turned into excuses for people that do terrible things. How he still brings up Ashton and Brad Pitt ALL the time when they are two extremely gross men who have done awful things is beyond me. Monica does not contribute to the interviews in any meaningful way and is insufferable in the fact checks. And if she still edits the show, it’s not good. Why can we all tell that it’s so heavily edited after all these years. Sadly complete thumbs down.
  • AnnaZ01
    Love this show!
This is my favorite podcast! I love Dax’s perspectives on trauma and it gives me so much hope that these convos can be more open! I also love Monica and am so glad she’s on the show. I’ll always rate it 5 stars but Dax, lighten up on Monica in the fact checks 🩷

    Listening
Long time listener. Almost quit caring when Dax said Rogan was “fine”. Nope, not for a majority of us who believe life can be lead in a more compassionate less machismo way. Monica thankfully articulated why it’s important to have other voices balance out the awfulness of recent propganda. Grateful to her for standing up for the audience who has a broader universal understanding (not just the “disenfranchised white men”)
  • Smortie
    Enjoy
I like to learn new information and hear different views challenged. I also like to enjoy just “checking out” yet being entertained. This show is a good way for me to get out of my head of constantly thinking about negativity.

    The editing
I’ve never really listened to this show until the Nikki Glaser interview and the editing was insane, very distracting. Sounded like you sped her voice up and she already talks extremely fast so it was like whoa
  • MeeshKing
    Fact check
Monica, as Dax said, the people don’t hate “the rich”. It’s about taxation, and “rich” people paying their fair share. You really know how to highlight your privilege!

    Favorite
This has become one of my most favorite podcasts. I found it late but binged the episodes. I’m so impressed with the research done on all the guests and how closely Dax and Monica listen to their guests and follow up. They’re up there for me with Howard Stern. Give them a talk show please!

Love all things from Armchair Expert
I’ve listened to so many of the shows under the Armchair Expert Umbrella. It’s relatable, informative, and funny. I would especially recommend the Experts episodes! It’s so cool they highlight experts in fields that aren’t normally interviewed on mainstream shows.

    Too Fast
The Nikki interview is too annoying to listen to. Nobody talks this fast. Cut back on the speed increase and pause edits.
  • Sequatchiee43
    Not now, but right now.
Just listened to the episode with Paul Giamatti and wondered why the continuity and flow was so good. It didn’t take long to figure it out: there were no Monica interruptions, interjections, tsk tsk judgements, projections, fake laughter, talk about superficial luxury items, patronizing, or corrections. The Dax/Kristen pity party for her needs to be over. Show her the door! Let’s face the music!

    DNA Testing
Love the podcast. Have been listening since the very beginning!! The stories in this episode were so amazing. I’m sad that I didn’t know about the prompt. My husband has a crazy, unbelievable DNA story. If you ever visit the topic again, we would love to submit.

David is lovely - Monica is self absorbed
David has real insight and very likable. Monica is - wow, uninformed, bossy and rude. Tried to come back to armchair but the host are no longer likable. Self-absorbed out of touch spoiled snobs.

Bigoted and privileged opinions that are out of touch. Often not having discussions that matter because those issues don’t exist to them.

    Good Content, Bad Editing
The content is often enjoyable, but the editing is painful. There are literally no pauses, as if I am playing at 2x. Calm down, as this creates stress as a listener. So unnatural. I want to enjoy this. I do! But, no.
