"39(!Great informationIf your looking for good practical information to improve your big game hunting, this is the podcast to listen too.

night pondWell doneA well done podcast that comes from a place of honesty and integrity. I also do not see any of the subjects being discussed as click bait or an easy gloss over to lure listeners in like some other podcasts on the subject. I think Joseph puts his heart and soul into this and it shows. I also like that there are sponsors, but no commercials selling regular consumer goods. I’m sure he could , but chooses not to. I’ll keep listening.

Amazing BagelsSuperb PodcastThis is the best podcast I have come across for accurate experience based content. Joseph talks from decades of experience and research with a little bias thrown in as a bullet nerd. As a fellow bullet nerd I appreciate his in depth talks about all things bullets.

stick1371One of my favorites. This is a great hunting podcast. JVB covers rifles and calibers in a no nonsense manner and I say that as a guy who has hunted deer, elk, and bear in Oregon for over 30 years. The ads aren’t annoying and the audio is almost always flawless. If you’re a fan of hunting, shooting , or back country adventures in general give it a listen.
-
JMBetofExceptional Hunting/Shooting PodcastHost JVB gives well thought out and very informative information for new and experienced shooters and hunters. He’s got great stories, interesting guests and I believe very objective reviews of gear.

JSTEPP77Best Hunting podcast! If you want a podcast that is well very well put together, up to date, practical, extremely helpful, and fun to listen to look no further. Joseph Von Benedikt is a great storyteller, and he presents technical information in a simple and easy to understand style. It is evident that Joseph puts in the effort to be extremely knowledgeable on the content he puts out. I look forward to the treat of listening each week!

<3ALTop qualityThe practical approaches to preparing for success is unmatched. This is also a clean, family friendly show. Definitely has changed my life! He also has the courage to tell the truth about the risks of following popular opinion when it is not the best choice. The folks that don’t like this obviously have not seen enough kills with great equipment versus barely enough to get the job done. Go watch somebody spend weeks killing plains game with a 338 win mag versus anything smaller than 7 mm.
-
Woodwalker1Just excellent!Very well researched information!
-
GaMntHunterTop overall hunting showAlways great and informative information. He digs into things from all angles and even points out if he has a bias, which I appreciate. I still go back to a lot of the earlier episodes and get more out of it every time. Some people get their feelings hurt if someone disagrees, I don’t think he’s attacked anyone just a difference in opinion. I don’t always agree with him but always appreciate his honest opinion. Great show with great insight. I appreciate the work he does for our community and hopefully will continue for a long time.
-
CyclehawkHonest information & Solid resultsGreat to hear some truthful information about big game and back country rifles and cartridges. Small calibers cartridges have to be limited to small game and close range and choice shots. No matter what the current industry is selling. Keep up the good work!
-
International AdventurerSolid, sensible info on hunting cartridges and bulletsGood honest experience-based DIY and How-To guidance for hunters. Solid intel on cartridges and bullets for Western hunting, both classics and modern stuff.

LW DietelGreat podcast!I was fortunate enough to have been turned onto this podcast a few years ago. The content Joseph produces is consistently entertaining and quite informative, no matter your experience level. The detail he provides regarding “tricks of the trade” and candid pros/ cons he shares about hunting and marksmanship; gear; cartridges and bullets; rifles and optics; packs, boots and more have been beneficial to me in my backcountry hunting trips…the man is a wealth of knowledge. Since Joseph runs a clean show, I can share this podcast with my three young boys. They love to listen along as we drive to our next adventure. If you’re looking for an entertaining show, where honest opinions that backed by years of actual field experience are shared, you’ve come to the right place.
-
DTMagnumTop NotchOne of the best firearm podcasts out there. Presenter provides thoughtful information derived from a lifetime of experience and analytical analysis. If you want to dive into all things rifle hunting you’ve found the right place.
-
MWB_65Best in ClassJoseph’s vast experience and knowledge makes this podcast my favorite in the outdoor space (or any space for that matter). I appreciate his candor and curiosity, particularly as it relates to hunting bullet performance and ballistics. I was fortunate to share a Mozambique hunting camp with JvB in 2019. I had read his work before in periodicals, but we had never met, and I had no foreknowledge we would be sharing a camp. I really enjoyed getting to know Joseph and discovered we’re both part of the “nerd herd” concerning the technical aspects of ballistics. He wanted to see every recovered bullet that came into camp, and get the story. Above all, Joseph is a salt of the earth chap, of the utmost honesty and integrity!
-
Platinum Lawn & LandscapePractical Hunting Information from a modern Renaissance Man !I appreciate the structure and organization of this podcast. Most podcasts develop and sound like a conversation, whereas this podcast is structured like a magazine article or journal entry…& fittingly so, since Joseph is an accomplished author and editor - with significant reloading, competition shooting, & backcountry experience.
-
foulballchaserGreat infoLove this show. I look forward to every new episode on Fridays.
-
307 RancherMost informative hunting podcastThe Backcountry Hunting Podcast is the most informative hunting podcast there is. I have learned more from Joseph in couple of years than I have in decades of reading books, magazines and on forums. There is good information and entertainment no matter what kind of hunting you are in to.
-
Badlands Mountain HunterBest Hunting Podcast . Period.I listen to just about every hunting podcast out there, and I find Joseph to be authentic, completely honest and forthright, and incredibly knowledgeable on all things hunting. He is willing to give his unvarnished opinion on controversial topics, which I am grateful for. He does not try to create “fan boys” or acolytes, but simply calls things like he sees them. Those who might complain because he takes an opinion different from theirs need to toughen up and get a thicker skin. All serious backcountry hunters can learn a lot from this podcast.
-
TrippCanyonKidRelatable stories, cool gear.Interesting stories about hunting around the world. The cartridge deep-dives are particularly enjoyable. I understand some people have gotten upset at Joseph’s more traditional approach of using an appropriate sized tool for the job at hand. With all their fussing and objecting, one might start to believe some fragile egos are involved. Obviously there are differing opinions of what constitutes an appropriate big game cartridge. For whatever reason there are some highly triggered folks on one end of the spectrum. Reading this review section will tell you which end. All that aside, this show touches on a wide variety of subjects, hosts a lot of knowledgeable guests, and provides a lot of easily digestible episodes that I think most people will find value in.

Sparkle toesBest Hunting Content AvailableI first discovered the Backcountry Hunting Podcast in 2020 during COVID. I have listened to many others, but I have found none better. I look forward to a new episode every Friday. Covers everything from the western lower 48, to Alaska, to Africa, and everybody’s favorite, equipment. Give it a try and you will appreciate the well told stories and excellent advice from a top notch hunter!
-
South Hills Precision RiflesGreat PodcastJoseph Von Benedikt always has a entertaining show and his taste in hunting rifles often mirrors my own. Everyone may not always agree on everything and hunters can get passionate about their sport and way of life. The podcast promotes ethical hunting which I love.
-
Gubanguly BerdimuhamedowExcellent & Unbiased InformationI have been listening to this podcast for several years and have learned a great deal. JvB offers great advice on hunting game in the Western US and Africa. He also gives great advice on what types of rifles to use and the appropriate caliber and cartridge for various game species. He backs his recommendations up with real life examples from hunts he has been on. He also owns up to his mistakes so his listeners can learn from them. He doesn’t pretend to have all the answers he just tells you what worked for him and what did not. This podcast is a great resource for anyone who is interested in hunting or shooting.
-
TBlacktailTBlacktailThis is one of maybe three hunting related podcasts I follow and by far my favorite. Keep up the good work Joseph and I look forward to your 2025 episodes.
-
Wes338Hits with wallopJVB hosts an informative, well spoken, and thoroughly researched podcast. If you’re looking for information on cartridge selection, gear choices, or just great hunting stories…this is the place.
-
FrummerUnsubscribingThis is the kind of information you get when someone thinks they have all the answers and is incapable of learning. To insinuate Steve Speck is unethical and therefore so is a myriad of solid hunters who have done the research and not just gotten emotional or stuck to tired notions should be called out. There are much better voices than this random podcaster who Study the data and ballistics that have proven smaller calibers to be sound options and in many cases the better one. But this guy with a microphone and a computer feels ok attacking those people without any semblance of credibility to defend his attacks against fantastic people in the hunting world. Shameful display of bravado you haven’t earned nor do you deserve
-
mdmitchell2Lots of opinions with 0 anecdotes or logicHas gone on the assault against people using small calibers for killing big game and it’s absolutely childish. He has no data, anecdotes to back up his claims - he’s clearly just too entrenched in his beliefs to back out now so he’s digging in deeper.
-
Keep on cookinEpisode 328This episode showed this guys true colors. Bending truths, bad mouthing peers in the community, and only reading messages sent to inflate his already giant ego. No thank you. I’ve listened to many of the episodes, but this one left me disgusted. unsubscribed

PodcastJunkie4451UpdatedI listened to many (most) of the episodes from the beginning. Every now and then it includes some useful information, by you have to deal with a whole lot of nonsense. He is a glorified gear/bullet/gun salesman. Using Joseph’s advice on a lot of items (from calibers to bullets to glass) is like listening to a Tesla salesman explain the advantages of their pickups over an old half ton-technically some truth in there, but mostly nonsense in the real world. Likeable guy though, and I’m a real fan of some folks who pop into this show now and again (e.g., Tyler Freel). This podcast would be a death trap for a newer hunter with a checkbook and lack of experience to filter the b.s.

DoodooburdThis guy has no idea what he’s talking aboutStumbled across this podcast. Don’t waste your time. This guy is clueless.
-
Flying Lead30/06 for ElkI really enjoy your podcast. The 30/06 for Elk podcast was right down my alley as I’m the one rifle hunter (Weatherby Hunter 30/06) and not a cartridge reloader. I might never get an opportunity to elk hunt, but if I do the rifle is ready.
-
Fattymatty2by4The last name and the voice are fantastic!Great show, great voice and cadence! I would love to hear shows about the nuances of elk hunting in the separate phases of the season, especially the rifle/late seasons.
-
CBSD6791Great info and fun topicsLove the show, it’s fun to hear about the new gear and how it shakes out in the field in real world situations. I have learned a lot from this pod cast. And I think Joseph is an absolute great story teller. Follow his magazine articles also.
-
smakn!Best teacher everI wish I had HAD a teacher like Joseph in high school, I would’ve learned something.
-
Dude 105?/!Great InsiteAnother view at the backcountry and great information!
-
Austin SmedleyWonderfulI’ve followed Joseph’s career for a long time and he’s one of my favorite gun writers today. I grew up reading all of the old guard greats. VonBenedict is right there with them. I’d also suggest signing up for the Patreon if you’re a fan of the show. Awesome additional content.
-
EthanG199Great showLove the show. Joseph brings great knowledge, stories, and guests to the show and always has a great show for listeners!
-
coitus non-interuptus.308 vs. .30-06Great breakdown of the.308 and .30-06! I think a few notable backcountry hunters hunt with .308 and have touted it as a good backcountry cartridge. Thay do also limit themselves and show great discipline in not shooting past the cartridge’s limits.
-
FloGar22The Best Hunting Podcast You Can Listen ToThis is by far one of the best podcasts you can listen to about hunting. I drew a bighorn sheep tag last year and I built a mountain rifle specific for the job. Using the techniques and shooting tactics I learned from listening to this I was able to harvest my team of a lifetime.
-
JJC22$My Favorite Hunting PodcastI find this podcast more helpful, informative, and practical than any other hunting podcast.
-
jdarula1Great hostExcellent podcast!
-
AlaskanExileCan’t go wrong.Top hunting podcast. This is a great show, and I look forward to my drive to work each Friday. I love this podcast, because Joseph knows of what he speaks, and you will not waste your time, there aren’t any extended “Bro” sessions where 3-4 guys sit around for 3 hours blabbing about things they don’t understand. The content is top notch, and it moves. Joseph efficiently covers the topic, and keeps it interesting. The guests are usually industry leaders, people who are getting things done and having an impact. I cannot recommend this show enough for the person who is interested in backcountry hunting, or ballistics and reloading. I truly appreciate that this show is clean, you can listen to it in front of anyone.
-
SDC859Excellent PodcastThe material in this podcast is well-researched, accurate, and applicable. It has helped me greatly in my journey as a hunter, and has brought many hours of entertainment.

Bossman SeniorThe Backcountry Hunting Podcast-Best!This podcast combines the best of rifles, cartridges, gear, and gadgets along with stories of epic hunting adventures and practical outdoor logic. Give it a try…you won’t be disappointed 😉
-
Jackson_ClayBest hunting podcast I’ve triedThis is the best hunting and backcountry podcast I’ve tried. It contains a vast amount of knowledge and information for everyone just starting out to those who have been doing it all their lives. Absolutely love it!!
-
pitbossguyLove thisJust started listening a few months ago and love the informative, well thought out, accurate information on many shooting and hunting subjects and presented in an entertaining way? My go to podcast for anything Backcountry hunting, shooting or just plain entertaining programming! Keep up the great work! You didn’t talk me into a 280 Ackley improved yet but did convince me on a 7mm PRC!
-
Cory WeidemanGreat fullI have never gave Africa hunting much thought one way or another but after hearing you and Ron bring up elephants and it really opened my eyes to more than just America thanks I still don’t have much interest in hunting there. I will definitely defend the topic with more information because of you all. Phill of duck dynasty or the unashamed podcast said it best when he quoted the New Testament when Jesus tells his disciples to eat all the animals God created
-
JNM3006The Most Informative Podcast There IsThe most informative podcast there is in regards to caliber, cartridge, bullet choice. He (Joseph) has (obviously) hunted (and killed) many different animals with a wide variety of rifles, cartridges, and bullets. I’ve both learned a lot and also reaffirmed things I already knew. He also seems like a humble man and that means as much to me as anything.
-
Nothing@1The BestThe information he gives out is priceless.
-
westernhunter LFD7mm PRC vs 6.8WesternI got my browning chambered in 68 when it first came out in six months after that, I was able to buy Winchester 200 pieces of brass each bag had 100 and I’m pretty sure I got one from Cabelas and one from Scheels but I know I got one from Scheels for sure
-
