I have been listening to Broken Ground for 5 years and I cannot get enough. SELC does great work helping people, teaching people, and listening to people. This is THE environmental podcast, especially if you live in the south.

What a wonderfully produced piece with a truly pertinent discussion about the fragility of so many places due to the threats of climate change and the resistance by many to act in a way that recognizes the reality of it and the destruction it causes. I enjoyed its emphasis on finding solutions such as pivoting to different building materials.

I have been getting these nice postcards from SELC for awhile, but being busy I hadn’t paid too much attention to them — until now. I noticed that the latest one mentioned this podcast and I thought “well, that should be easy” since podcasts make it easy to enjoy documentaries whenever you have spare moments or can easily multitask. So I began listening and loved it. I did not even know about this infamous pipeline (just those involving First Americans), nor about Al Gore’s involvement (I’m always disappointed that more politicians — especially Democrats, are not more like activists like Dennis Kucinich or former Representative Cynthia McKinney from GA or former Representative, Joe Kennedy from MA). Anyway, thank you so much for dispelling my ignorance!!! Beautifully done!

An important and meaningful season! Great storytelling, lots of voices and audio from the community, excellent sound and editing. Worth a listen!

I have listened in the past to the Broken Ground podcasts, but the Boxtown/Byhalia pipeline story is excellent. It incorporated the voices of the participants so well that I felt like I knew them personally by episode 7. The use of true life suspense in aid of the podcast kept me excited about the release of each new chapter.

I have been listening to Broken Ground for a while now and have enjoyed the interviews with environmental justice activists and lawyers. Season 5 takes the podcast to another level in telling the story of citizens of Memphis in their fight against a oil pipeline and for a healthy community. I couldn’t wait for the next episode each time!

This podcast strikes a wonderful balance between building a story arc and providing information about a complex issue. Breaking down the Boxtown residents’ fight against the Byhalia Pipeline into segments about citizens, journalists, scientists and council members provides an accessible template for others who are interested in environmental justice issues. As a member of Philly Thrive, a group of residents and allies demanding justice for southwest Philadelphians living near the PES Oil Refinery (now being “remediated” by the Hilco corporation), I found so much inspiration in the interviews with the Memphis community members. What a wonderful snapshot of local activism. Thank you!!

Broken Ground is a smart, interesting, important podcast that everyone interested in environmental justice & human communities should pay attention to, and not only in the South. I’m loving it! Thank y’all for your thoughtful reporting.

Wonderful characters and great storytelling in this David and Goliath story about what happens when the people of Boxtown stand their ground against a big company who wants to put a pipeline through their neighborhood.

Stumbled upon your podcast while looking for podcast with environmental focus. Being a very proud Southerner and seeing your spotlight on part of the region peeked my interest. And being black female, I am reminded of my own experiences both good and bad from our area. I quickly listened to all of your episodes and found myself wanting more. I even further researched episodes because of the connection created between listeners and the people using their voices for change. The alert on my phone today was music to my ears; knowing you’re out their again as an audible partner for justice. What you and the Southern Environmental Law Center exhibit is a willingness to allow all voices to share the spotlight. This podcast is beautiful, personable and the silver lining to the work SELC is fighting for.

There is not much more I can add to the accolades already provided in the reviews. This is the one podcast in my subscription that I listen to as soon as it is released. I am a life long Virgininian and see how the SE United States is affected by climate change. This podcast allows you to hear from the residents being directly affected and explains the issues in an easy to understand and compassionate format. Thank you to the creators of this podcast.

Broken Ground is so thorough in its research, information, and presentation that the listener gets a complete education and understanding of each of the issues presented from the onset. The material is given in a compelling, articulate manner making it easy to follow and learn as narrator delves deeper and deeper into the complexities of the issue at hand.This is essential listening!

As a resident of Norfolk, Virginia, aka “Flood City,” this podcast hits close to home. It explains complex concepts in a simple manner. Well worth listening to!

I can only describe the production and organization of Broken Ground as artful. These stories of advocacy and redemption matter immensely, so I’m glad so much effort has been made to tell them. I also like that it’s all close to home— as a Virginian, I mean that literally!

So articulate, informative, and humane. As a Southerner, I find it compelling, stimulating and authentic. And unlike most of the podcasts I listen to, it does not jar my nerves by recording (or re-recording) at one and one-half time speed. Kudos to SELC.

This podcast is phenomenal! The stories are compelling, factual, and well told. It covers important topics and is so engaging I find myself still thinking about the injustices it details days after listening. Definitely recommend!

This podcast is very well done and reminds me somewhat of radio labs. Very informative and educational. Good listen for everyone to learn and become aware of what is happening to our environment as we go about our busy lives. Hopefully we all learn from this that we can make a difference if we put in the time and energy to some major environmental issues we are facing.

Broken Ground is incredibly well researched and produced - reminds me of Serial and some of the other NPR podcasts. The stories they are telling are so important and deserved to be shared.

Important stories are being told about how at a local level, folks are standing up for their rights and the environment. Great first season!

Not only are they using the power of the law to protect our most valuable natural resources programs like this do so much to educate people on the issues. Well told human stories of how we’re dealing with the challenges that face us in the south. Awesome.

This podcast shares valuable stories that either haven't gotten the coverage they deserved from the news or are easy to miss amidst the daily bombardment of information the average person experiences from news outlets and social media. I am learning important information about the environmental issues faced by communities in the part of the U.S. I've called home for almost all of my life. The host and editors are great at making the concepts they're covering easy to understand and keeping the episodes to a reasonable length. This is a great podcast for anyone who wonders how the struggle for environmental justice could be relevant to them.

Powerful episodes giving a strong voice to stories not told. I was instantly captivated. These episodes are fascinating and compelling and so important to listen to as we find our way back from major environmental mistakes. Thank you to Claudine Ebeid McElwain for helping bring awareness to these issues with excellent storytelling and research. We need to listen and learn and this podcast helps with just that.

This podcast is a true public service. Shedding light on an underreported topic at a crucial time in the world. Claudine is an amazing host. The story telling is excellent and I was hooked from my first listen. Can’t wait for more episodes and keep up the great work!!

I am an avid podcast listener. I love all kinds of podcasts with great stories. This is definitely one that got me hooked from the first episode. I keep checking back for the next episodes because I am truly looking forward to learning more and hearing about true people’s stories. I randomly saw a negative review for this podcast (as I was leaving mine) saying the reviews are fake. I have no affiliation with the group that produces this podcast. I simply wanted to encourage others to have an open mind and listen. To me, the reviewer sounded very angry for no reason. It does not need to be directed towards this group.

Obviously fake reviews. I doubt mine will stay posted long. Self righteous SJW’s preaching to their base. Faux-gritty subject matter and faux-alarmism. No such thing as southern-environmental-law-boondoggle, obviously trying to play off the SJW’s warped view of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s credibly and ‘grit’. Low energy. Sad.

This is the best new podcast I’ve heard in a long time. There aren’t nearly enough stories being told about environmental issues, particularly in the south, and you’ll realize after listening to just one of these episodes what we’ve all been missing. Could not recommend strongly enough.

Enlightening, moving, important, and just highly competent and compelling all around. Can’t wait for the next one!
