Such an informative podcast! But PLEASE ditch the sound effects
I find this podcast to be so interesting! When the recent co-host left the show, I wasn’t sure how the podcast would continue, but I found it to be even better (so, great job Dr. Steier!). She brings on so many informative guests and the way she unpacks topics always leaves me learning something new. As I mentioned in the title, please stop all the odd sound effects. I am currently listening to the concussions episode, and when I realized I wasn’t even listening to what was being said, but rather was trying to figure out if I was listening to applause, running water, or a garbage truck outside the podcast studio, I just had to pause the episode and leave a review to plead for this to stop :) But five stars all the way on the podcast, hosts, and content! Love it!

    Relevant & Important
Awesome podcast! Very knowledgeable and in words anyone can understand! Relevant and important topics. I appreciate the candor. As a healthcare worker, I find it courageous and critical to shed light on some of these more controversial issues others shy away from. Thank you!

A Physician’s View of Unbiased Science
I am a family practitioner in the Chicago area, one of my patients recommended I listen to the podcast Unbiased Science. I listened to their show on concussions, and was extremely impressed. The two podcasters were very well informed and discussed the issue of brain injury in a way that was understandable to the lay public without being too technical. I plan to subscribe to this podcast and recommend it to my patients. Looking forward to their program on vaccines.

    Sound effects
The sound effects distract from the podcast.

Good content, weird sound effects and affectations
I like the science content but what was up with the weird sound effects in the “Heads Will Roll” episode? It was so distracting. I thought some other program was creating the sounds. I closed every app and eventually paused the podcast to confirm it was coming from the podcast itself. I also get so tired of the weird affectations of the main host—always overpronouncing “chicago” as a joke in multiple episodes, always being so loud and sometimes talking over others, the insecurity about being a third wheel, and so on. Just talk at a normal volume and say “Chicago” normally or if that’s impossible, stop inviting people from Chicago.

    Not unbiased
Just finished listening to my first episode “snake for oil” of this show. I wasn’t too sure what this was about but it’s definitely not unbiased. While I agree with some of the points about current “wellness” trends are just to capitalize on products and is doing what big pharma is doing, I don’t agree that wellness trends are the same as functional medicine. Nothing was critiqued about our current healthcare system in the USA. I think a lot of people seek alternative medicine AFTER they’ve not gotten results from conventional medicine. I would have loved to see points and critiques of both that way it would be unbiased.

The bias: you’re a big dummy if you didn’t already know this
I agree with basically everything they go over, BUT- when I reached an episode where they were talking about myths etc and they spoke about aspartame…. It’s long been known it doesn’t cause cancer, the problem is how it affects your gut microbiome. There’s a lot of studies, that isn’t controversial.. Who’s the dummy now! haha In all seriousness, the content is good but her attitude is repellant. I wish I could send some of this content to people in my life who have fallen for misinformation, but I can’t because she’s so dismissive and eye-roll and straight up mean about it. Still looking for competent science communicators in the nutrition/medical space (key word: communicator!!)

Interesting content but annoying to listen to
I love the idea of this podcast but the combination of poor audio and the host constantly talking over the guests makes it very difficult to listen to

Nice lady but I’m a bit disappointed
I hear a lot of people using sound bites like “vaccines are safe and effective” and “trust the science” and “conspiracy theories” so when I ran across this episode about vaccines I hoped she would go into the science of why vaccines are safe. It was all the same tropes, though, with discussion of “why don’t people trust vaccines” but no actual pulling out of scientific research studies. The “other side” has piles and piles of research studies they cite in depth. Why of the mainstream narrative about this topic is true don’t the scientists ever actually pull out the science? (Actually they did cite one study…. From the 1980s or something… that was debunked. But no actual favorable science). The search continues.

    Really wanted to like it
Love the idea, hate the execution. Dr Jessica is well meaning but she rambles a lot and doesn’t let her interviewees talk about THEIR expertise. If you bring someone on the show, let them do the talking. Her questions are redundant and not very open ended. She’ll ask questions that are a min long. You gotta let your interviewees speak.

Brilliant podcast — a must listen every week
One of my favorite podcasts! Its gotten better and better with each season. Love the interviews and the wide range of topics and guests. Grateful for a podcast with such a balanced approach that’s evidence based and supported by such thorough research.

    Culturally Incompetent, Biased, Eurocentric
I’m really disappointed in the acupuncture episode. The podcasters make several errors in their description of TCM. There is a ton of solid evidence that supports the efficacy and safety of acupuncture - how did they miss all of it? Insurance takes absolutely forever to verify that something is legit before they cover it, and most major insurance companies cover acupuncture. Why are these podcasters not even as up to date as our insurance companies? And why not invite a licensed acupuncturist onto the show to explain TCM instead of butchering it themselves? I don’t know why they kept repeating the part about seeing a licensed acupuncturist. Like, obviously?! No one is going to see an unlicensed primary care physician, so why would anyone see an unlicensed acupuncturist? It sounds like they automatically don’t trust anyone who practices acupuncture, which sounds like….hm, a bias? A racial or cultural bias? Don’t be freaked out people. To become a licensed acupuncturist, you have to have at least a master’s in TCM, though many have a Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM) degree. These programs are extensive - often the master’s degree takes 5 years, and they involve many clinical hours. There is an acupuncture board that oversees everything. There is a code of ethics. You can loose your license if you screw up or do something unethical. These people clearly have no respect for the traditional medical system of China. This is sadly an example of elitist views that put western medicine above everything else. Not everything is about pharmaceuticals, but that is all that this podcast cares about.

    Such a great resource
This Podcast and all their social media resources are invaluable resources for well researched, unbiased, and relevant scientific and medical information. In a world with so much poor quality data and misinformation it’s such a breath of fresh air!!

Good intent. Not a good interviewer.
I really want to like this podcast because I do like the intent. I’m mid way through my second episode and I find it difficult to listen. Instead of skillfully interviewing the expert guest, the host talks and talks. Often the host states her hypothesis about an issue, at length, and then asks the expert if they agree. At times she realizes that she has spoken too long and stops awkwardly. Please, work on your interviewing skills. You’ll have plenty of room to discuss with the guest and even state your theories.

    Kudos, Unbiased Docs!!
I love your content because you make it accessible and everything you share and say is 100 percent science backed. In a world gone mad for bad alternatives to what to do right, I feel grateful that I can count on you both for accurate and honest and reliable information that helps me to live my best life. Bravo!!!!
  • Insightstoday
    Interesting, and unfortunately one sided…
I was thrilled to find something to debunk some of the fear mongering myths. However, unbiased means presenting both sides of the issue with data to support or reject claims. This pod unfortunately doesn’t do that. It’s one sided. And, still an interesting perspective. The docs presenting are very passionate, I’ll give them that!

  • Overtime Reviewer
Shame this podcast has “science” in the name.
This podcast cites outdated research. The hosts use an air of authority to present only one side of science as the “right” and only side even when the scientific findings themselves are still under development and inconclusive. I feel sorry for anyone who thinks they are getting “unbiased” “science” from this podcast. I feel even sorrier for anyone who is going to get gaslit by their nurses and loved ones because of biased misinformation a listener heard on this pod. I would hope doctors would have the critical thinking skills to see what they are getting on this podcast, but likely some of them too.

    Refreshing and Informative
I really enjoy listening to this podcast every week. The hosts are credible and passionate about sharing evidence-based information, and their episodes are focused, yet full of personality. I’ve learned so much from Drs. Love and Steier, and I thank them for all of their efforts to bring this information to the public.
  • Benevolent Sociopath
    Great information
I have yet to listen to the full catalog. But from what I’ve heard : The focus on evidence base reality is great to see. In a world full of made up credentials, unregulated nonsense, and pseudoscience these two help combat misinformation. My only critique as with most academics I’ve followed, they focus on quality content to the detriment of crisp, clear, presentation. ( they could definitely use an audio quality tuneup.) I’ve seen others take issue with the name “unbiased” and while it is true that we all bring with us to the table our own bias. I am not so much a pedant. professionals are aware of their bias and open to new information provided it is evidence based.
  • Ljohnson05
    Look elsewhere for unbiased.
Listened to a few shows, that’s all it took to see that this show is not unbiased. Very unfortunate because people really want the unbiased aspect.

    Fantastic content, terrible production values.
This podcast is so close to being great, but I just can’t listen due to poor production quality. Echoey, clipping audio abound and the editing is haphazard. Looking forward to the evolution of this content as the values improve.

Medical and science communication is hard!
This duo does a great job communicating complicated topics in understandable and engaging ways. Any scientist will tell you that we never get it 100% right for 100% of the audience, but in these contentious times we need more science literacy so we can continue to have conversations that matter. Keep up the good work!

A Fun Genius Pod, Expand Your Mind
This is so needed right now and honestly long ago. Facts based information and explanation. Science is a process with results and details evolving, not always what some would make it. They make it fun without sympathizing with bull****. Love hearing all the latest on the medical end. Keep it up, ladies. 🤓

    Fantastic science communicators!
So incredibly grateful you fabulous duo exist! I work in market research and consistently need to “remind” (and battle) colleagues on misusing the data to fit their story. It’s nothing compared to the work you’re doing for society, but I feel ya! Thanks for being fantastic science communicators!

    Fantastic.
This show is fantastic and the epitome of evidence based. Special thanks for the Lyme disease episodes - I’m an RD and have been swarmed with questions so those episodes were awesome. I guarantee people who are rating this show low/leaving bad reviews are your classic “I only partake in homeopathic medicine, all conventional medicine is corrupt” type. This podcast clearly isn’t for them if they want to continue living in a fantasy world. Well done ladies, keep it up!

    A must listen!
As an RDN, I love how educational this show is about all forms of science — nutritional, wellness, and alternative health! Dr. Andrea and Dr. Jess brings such great topics to the table that are not only accurate, but relevant to what is happening in our world today. I promise you will learn something new you did not know before!

    Fueled by sponsors
Anyone who wants to believe these two are unbiased scientists should research their actual day jobs. They are constantly fighting comments on social media that they are biased due to funding. But please research their highly profitable company “vital statistics consulting” and see who their clients are (ahem, pharmaceutical companies and government agencies) Total conflict of interest.

    Pit Bull Apologists
Enjoyed the show until the episode discussing Pit bull maulings and fatalities. There is an overwhelming amount of science that supports the pitbull’s winning record of maulings and fatalities to humans and pets. It is not how they are raised - this dog was bred to fight and kill. Historic documentation shows depictions of Christopher Columbus using his pit bull dogs to subjugate and conquer Indigenous peoples, often feeding them still alive to his “War Dogs”. But I get it – you don’t want to upset anybody and lose ratings. Bye.

    Poorly Named: Definitely Biased Science
I don’t have a problem with mainstream educated scientists having their own show to proselytize their pov. I do mind that they have the hubris to call themselves “Unbiased Science” …as human beings who make and have made choices to which you internalize values, you’re inevitably going to have a bias. Science changes. We learn new things. We often learn we were wrong. And the scientific community has a long history of being behind the times on accepting any change to the convention of the day(Galileo, Newton, Darwin anyone?) When scientists become married to past teaching, they resemble religious zealots more than objective and unbiased researchers. I found these doctors to be no exception. I appreciate their mission to calm fears and call out quackery, but I think it’s highly misleading to claim not to be biased when they clearly have a mission and an agenda which have in several podcasts, resulted in a blurring of the facts, an inability to admit when “we don’t know for sure” is all science can say at this point, and a refusal to argue the best opposing view and instead take aim at the lowest hanging fruit.

    Highly recommend!
I recently discovered the Unbiased Science podcast and am so glad I did! Dr. Jessica, Dr. Andrea, and their incredible guests provide a wealth of knowledge and insight into a wide range of scientific topics and do an excellent job of presenting complex information in an easy-to-understand and engaging way. Go ahead and give it a "follow," this show will quickly become a favorite in your feed!
  • Kaity89
    Meh
I wouldn’t really say this podcast delivers on the promise to be unbiased. For example, on the formula vs. breastfeeding episode their guest was an employee of Bobbie (the formula company). I combo fed both of my kids so I have absolutely no skin in the game for one side or the other, but I just don’t know how you call that unbiased any more than if the guest was an employee of La Leche League or a breast pump manufacturer.
  • Clauderella11ProMax
    Do the research
If you are calling yourself scientists, then you would do the due diligence to research the science behind carnivore diet as opposed to calling out themes reported in the media. You’re basically summing up what you see on a surface level of what is the carnivore diet. All of the criticism you make towards what is harmful regarding the diet is actually not correct and through supporting studies and research done by many doctors, including cardiologists, there is a solid reason as to why what you have learned all these years does not apply to the context of a carnivore diet. In addition, you must realize the bias in studies, how funded studies influence the outcome and the effect of variables that are not within the context of a carnivore diet. Allow yourself to look at the new science that has emerged, that has debunked the classic way of looking at how our body metabolizes food. Do yourself a favor and actually do the work if you really want to understand the carnivore diet. Once you understand and try it out yourself the correct way, you may find you can feel like Super woman. Otherwise, you come across as two close minded and misinformed ladies. And for you to use liver King as the example of the carnivore diet, shows your ignorance and also emphasizes the fact that you are merely going off of viral social media content stemming from exaggerated information or misinformation. Why don’t you talk to Judy Cho. She is unbiased and has all of the science to back it up. I don’t know anyone in the community that eats raw liver. You two believe livestock is the number two cause of climate change, that’s ridiculous too. There’s so much you two do not know. Read a book. Sacred cow, for example. The way you present the information regardless of what you believe in is just a poor format because it is so evident that you do not do the real research. I would not want to listen to any other podcasts because it’s clear that you have a bias, especially when you’re only feeding off of click bait headlines regarding a diet.

    86 weight as a metric & you’ll see
“You could have a nice, trim waist.” Oh goodie, do I also lose my ADHD, autism, and physical disability? How else can you ‘help’ me? I’ll still be ignored, shamed, and made fun of, but thank the good doctors that I’ll have such a pretty waist. [in the words of the queen herself: ‘how bout a round of applause? a standing ovation?’] ~~~ BMI episode was the reason I unsubscribed. ~~~ They spend a lot of time discussing what word will or won’t offend fat people. ~~~ WAKE UP: You’re arguing about which words help you focus on the wrong metrics. That’s the bullying part of this episode: you’re giving a great example of how very few MD’s can shift their focus from the weight & fatness of a person. THINK ABOUT IT: What if you just dropped the weight metric for an evaluation? Vital signs seem to be pretty dang important, how are those? Activities that people enjoy doing increase overall well being. How about facilitating discussion on how to participate in activities? Ability to complete daily tasks & access resources seems to really increase positive outcomes. Have you asked about any tasks at home or work that someone is struggling with? BE FLEXIBLE: You could then give medical advice on how to safely work towards goals together. And you could have better long term outcomes if you just stop being so stuck on weight. It’s like the sheer offensive-ness of being fat makes it impossible to consider any other metric for measuring health. GET REAL ABOUT IT: Yes, your body and it’s state of able-ness determines how you will complete tasks and navigate life. Certain physical conditions get in the way of things you need to do. What is more important? Losing that weight or completing that task? As a doctor, is it safer to put someone on Phen and risk those side effects or suggest they try electively walking the stairs at work to increase their endurance so they can garden more or something they enjoy? they just took out half of the drug that literally stopped people’s hearts and kept on writing Rx’s)

I came for the science, I stay for the puns
Its a hard feat to present heavy science-based information in a way that the general public can hear, understand, and then act on. Thank you for your work! I look forward to hearing your takes on many more topics with the appropriate PMIDs and explanations and the occasional expert guests. Excellent!

The BEST place for easy to understand and unbiased information
I got into this podcast when Covid was in full swing but was hooked! Jess and Andrea DO THE WORK and are intelligent, clear, and thoughtful in their work. I recommend them to everybody when I hear fear-mongering in the news. They have well-balanced perspectives that are easy for a non-scientist to understand. Thank you!

These ladies are fabulous and truly do help cut through the noise of a lot of misinformation that propagates in popular science. They are never afraid to discuss uncertainty and have a laser sharp focus on breaking down some of the most complex topics that’s accessible to all. Highly recommended
