Evil By Design

More than 80 women from around the world have accused the fast-fashion mogul Peter Nygard of rape, sexual assault and human trafficking in incidents across four decades and at least four countries. He denies it all, and claims his accusers are lying as part of a vast conspiracy. The Winnipegger had built a sprawling international retail empire over the past 50 years — but now, Nygard's professional achievements are being overshadowed by a sinister personal life, earning him the moniker, ‘Canada’s Jeffrey Epstein’. Host Timothy Sawa has been an investigative journalist at the CBC for more than two decades. For almost half that time, he’s been part of a team investigating Peter Nygard and defending his journalism in court. Now, he helms a new podcast that asks the key questions: Who are the women and men who have stepped forward? Which systems failed them? And how did Nygard get away with it for so long? Don’t feel bad for richette
Richette acted like the other girls deserved this, or we’re not church people? She was ok till it almost happened to her sister. Even then it did not give her any compassion. Ahe could have been saving her money for the last 5 years to get out.. with her own jeep! Then it happened to her? She still went back for the money. She may have been the only bread winner. I do not feel bad. I’m not saying she is not a victim. She was a complicit one.

    Unbelievable
Heartbreaking story and infuriating that this went on for SO LONG. And I can’t believe this Suelyn person has 3+ million followers on IG. Disgusting. If these people only knew….

    My new fave!
This was amazingly done! Such a terribly heartbreaking story! Listening to these ladies tell their stories just absolutely breaks my heart. But listening to his son…maybe it’s because of my own daddy issues…I literally cried the entire episode. “He didn’t have skeletons in his closet. He had a graveyard.” The courage shown throughout this podcast is just mind blowing for me! Highly recommend! 😭😭😭😭😭

    Good reporting
The reporting is good and I appreciate the reporters voice. I am questioning the reporting of the transgender murders as “stop the presses “ news when you consider the on-going violence against women that isn’t news. Each death is a loss but I find the eclipse of news about women in our current world amazing and sad. Besides noting that news-miss, this is well done.

    A Must Listen
This is a compelling and complex story spanning the world over 40 years. Well done! I could not stop listening. The victims bravery came through despite the pain, humiliation and powerful systems in place to intimidate, shut them up and shut them down. These stories are painful and raw. The women are powerful. So impressed with the way their stories are conveyed here. Thank you for letting us hear them. Spoiler alert: Peter Nygård is a monster. What is surprising is that his sons are incredibly decent human beings and end up helping the victims. Especially Kai. Shout out to his mother. (Whom I assuming did an amazing job raising him) Thank you CBC and Timothy Sawa for your herculean efforts to get this story out. We all owe you a debt of gratitude for thoughtfully and accurately telling the victims experiences and fully exposing this predatory monster.

    Incredible reporting
Always good information from wondery, just facts, lots of them, and a long standing story, insane. Binged it of course.

    So well done!
Not slimly. Not salacious. Just facts told in a cohesive manner. I could not stop listening!

    Must listen!
This podcast is incredible! Many thanks to the creators for their efforts, research, and quest for justice for victims of Peter Nygard. This story is not as known as other cases, but hopefully this amazing podcast will help get the word out. Again, many thanks to the creators.

This podcast is really well done and shines light on a lot of things that should be talked about.

    Couldn’t get past first episode
This looked like an interesting podcast, but the sound of the audio, the choppiness in voices (that sounded like robots) were a turn off. I’ve liked many other CBC podcasts but not this one.

    A MUST listen.
I am a daily listener of podcasts and a nonfiction podcast snob, consistently on the look out for the best produced content only (75% true crime). I binged all episodes of “Murder by Design” in less than 24 hours. I cannot believe I didn’t come across it sooner. Incredibly well edited, gripping journalism, touching stories of the victims, and an amazingly clear and pointed version of decades of investigation. This was the first I heard of this case, thank you for your work. I look forward to continuing to follow it, as well as finding more CBC produced podcasts.

    Hard to hear.
I have to say that this is a really good podcast. It's thorough and just ,well done. That being said I can't listen to it for very long because I get so angry. Great podcast though!

As sad and sickened this story made me feel, I thought it was one of the best I have ever listened to. Incredibly well done. Highly recommend.

    Thank You
I salute you all for your journalistic integrity, tenacity, and overall excellence. This podcast is incredible—Gripping, thorough, well crafted, and most importantly (considering the subject matter) not salacious. As a survivor of sexual abuse I especially appreciate the appropriate and sensitive treatment toward the victims who have come forward, their individual stories, as well as those victims who have chosen remain anonymous Thank you so much for your reportage and for exposing the crimes of of PN—the global web of influence in which he is enmeshed, and the acolytes who enabled these horrors.

    True Journalism
Sterling journalism, very thorough. Good editing. Focuses on facts and seeks comment from all sides. Respects the victims and the trauma they have suffered; allows them to tell their stories. An important exposé of a violent monster and the corrupt system that enabled him in the US, in Canada, and in the Bahamas. The episode where Nygard tries to have the CBC reporters silenced is illustrative. If you’ve ever wondered how rich people get away with predatory and illegal behavior all the time, listen to this podcast in its entirety.

    Amazing!
It’s weird to say that a podcast about this is great but it is. It is researched well and they do everything they can to be as gentle and respectful to the survivors. Great listen!

    Courageous Investigators and Reporters
Thank you for your perseverance and courage in reporting the case against Peter Nygard!! It is appalling that this Monster abused so many girls/women for decades! The people who enabled Nygard must be held accountable, also. It’s time for Mr. Nygard to experience the rest of his life in the company of the general prison population! No protection or special treatment!

What a wild ride into the mind of a truly twisted individual. Timothy Sawa's reporting is out of this world, incredible that he got himself in legal trouble just for doing his job. I couldn't wait for each episode to air. Highly recommend.

    Great investigative reporting
Riveting. Looking forward to Nygaard getting his just desserts.

    Average at best.
Read one newspaper and you’ll get the same story it took 8 episodes to tell.

    Too Difficult
I cannot understand why such a nonjudgmental platform was given to the women who facilitated this behavior. For me, my disgust made it too difficult to continue to listen. Not asking difficult questions, or pointing out that they could have stopped this felt like implicit acceptance.

Nygard is the Epstein of Nassau. This is an intense, disturbing and gripping true story. The interviews are thorough and questions I would ask , no stone left unturned. I highly recommend this podcast.

    Fantastic
Yet another story of how money and influence gets you out of everything. This is DISTURBING. Excellent podcast, very impressed. Just hope this bastard doesn’t die before we actually see him prosecuted.

    Well done serial
So interesting to hear these historical abuse stories that span so many years and generations (Weinstein, Epstein, Nygard) thank goodness coming to surface as #MeToo gathered strength. Helps out general social consciousness to elevate criminal behavior from creepy to criminal. Both for the new generation who can be forewarned, and for those who’ve been through it and see more clearly it was abuse. Story-wise it’s one of the few serials that I have been able to pick up week to week (and not easily forget the previous week’s episode). Also nice job to the designers on the creepy icon! Thanks for putting it all together to the journalists and for the bravery of the survivors.

    Heartbreaking
So far I am impressed by the reporting and storytelling. It feels centered on the victims and amplifying their voices.

    Richette
It’s incredibly frustrating listening to episode 3, Richette does nothing until her sister and she are impacted, I don’t typically blame a victim, but how could she stand by and watch girls be abused. More frustrating is the podcaster doesn’t ask the hard questions, she should be indicted as well.

    Haunting
I think most Americans like me had no idea about this. Glad justice is finally being served to these women.

    Response to wats spy girl
I don’t think it’s just an islander thing. This happens all over the world. Women in poverty get exploited and promised jobs and a better life then end up being sex trafficked and can’t get out. I think the podcast does a good job explaining this.
  • hazelbnr
    Sobering professional account
The reporting - research educates those who listen how this dark world operated in a place known for sunny beaches and weekend escape.

    Wealthy people are pedophiles
Throughout history they’ve been telling all the subjects how awful we are! Time to keep an eye on the rich and powerful wouldn’t you say?
  • wats spy gurl
    Richette typical islander
It’s ok for a man to hurt some many until it’s your family. Richette is heartless and added a disgusting lowlife Man. And she is no better. I don’t care how clean she comes out with her mouth. I’m so saddened by women like Richette. They empower men to be scoundrels to other people/women. They turn their head instead of saying something. This man was horrific and it’s awesome that he has been caught in the story is being told. But people don’t seem to understand that Islanders do so much scamming of other countries. They manipulate people as well and the women the Islanders the women of the islands turn their heads to that as well and that’s why I’m disgusted by Richette as well as everyone else involved know what is happening.

    Important podcast, well delivered
This podcast does a good job of explaining the specific case of a prolific rapist, but perhaps more importantly highlights the way that young women’s rights are not respected in Caribbean culture. BTW...the name of this podcast is terrible 🙄
  • Polsteve
    Incredibly Important Reporting
Highly recommend this extremely important reporting on the wrongdoing of Peter Nygard. Such an important topic and very well done.
  • h2ocello
Very important story to get out there
....well done. Great reporting on such an upsetting, angering topic. I can’t wait for more episodes.
  • Green Tea Girl
    Compelling and timely.
This is an interesting podcast about a recent scandal that I hadn’t heard of. Another Jeffrey Epstein type who used and abused his position of power. Very well done and the stories of those interviewed are harrowing, but the stories are well told and definitely deserve to be heard. Well done!
