Pieces of Britney

47

Britney Spears: pop icon. Pandora Sykes pieces together what we know about her story, and what it tells us about sex, entertainment, and how we treat women in the public eye.

In this eight-part series for BBC Radio 4, Pandora traces Britney's incredible life: from her hardscrabble childhood in rural Louisiana, to her coronation as the inaugural pop princess of the internet, navigating an insatiable celebrity gossip complex; through to a young mother on trial by the paparazzi.

Britney is a pop culture phenomenon. Pandora looks behind that mask - and beyond Britney herself - to explore how Britney became the most Googled person in the world, for almost seven years, and what it says, both then and now, about the entertainment industry, politics, sex and how we see women in the public eye.

Britney's public struggles saw her placed in a conservatorship, in which she lost the right to control her finances and day to day life. Thirteen years later, and she is in court, pleading for this controversial legal arrangement to end. We will look at how Britney has been transformed from girl-next-door teen sensation to a mute symbol of a supposedly rotten system.

Pieces of Britney mixes documentary, archive and interviews to tell Britney's remarkable story. It also features drama, written by playwright Katie Hims, to bring Britney and her extraordinary world to life.

Pieces of Britney is a sympathetic portrayal of Britney, during a time of cultural reappraisal about how we treat women - famous, or otherwise. These are some of the stories that have been told about her - but The Narrative is hers to finish.

Presenter: Pandora Sykes Dramatist: Katie Hims Sound: Peter Ringrose Producers: Anne Isger & Sasha Yevtushenko A BBC Audio production for BBC Radio 4

    5 stars podcast
This is a well made podcast. One that describe the road to the conservatorship so well. When it comes to the Britney Spears’s story, so much will be missing, because you’d have to live through it all to actually understand it. There was a big new story about her nearly everyday.

Carefully woven together story. Very compelling delivery.
The culmination of archives, memoir “flashbacks”, interviews and narration is so carefully woven together. Such a compelling listen. I have literally zero complaints or constructive feedback on this podcast, which tbh is atypical for me 😂🤷🏻‍♀️😎🤓.

    Southern accents are terrible! Lol
The dramatizations are a nice touch but omg I can’t handle the accents! I’m from Georgia so yes I’m gonna be picky because Jamie sounds like somebody’s black grandpa and a grumpy drunk Kevin spacey put together which is just a really strange combination. Wish you could have gotten actual voice actors from the south! However, I really appreciate the in depth examination of media and culture in the early 2k’s, it’s not just glossed over and it really widens the lens for me to understand the America of my childhood better. Thanks for this! I think more people should listen

It’s good, but cut the dramatization
I really like this podcast in terms of the journalism that went into it and the discussion from experts. That said, I think the segments performed by actors are really terrible and it’s unclear to my why it was necessary to do that for the purposes of storytelling. It feels juvenile. It’s a good thing those segments are short, at least.

    Must listen
This is so good. I stayed in bed all morning just listening to the first 4 episodes (and I cannot wait to get to the next 4). This podcast expertly weaves together Britney’s riveting narrative in the context of women’s every day struggles with navigating the hypocritical standards that the world holds us to. 👏👏

    I can’t!!!
I can’t even get through the first episode! Why do people like this??? It’s a horrible way to tell our queens story with the fake country accents!! It’s offensive!!

    Really good
This is really good! Although I do NOT get the choice of opening and closing theme music. Doesn’t connect with Britney at all. Just no.

    Fabulous podcast!
This is such a fab podcast - listened to the whole thing in one go on a flight and finished hoping for more! I love how Pandora Sykes approaches the complexity and frames the narrative as Britney’s to finish. A really intelligent and insightful analysis of the events both culturally and in Britney’s life that led to the current situation.

    Eye Opening
Brilliant! Really interrogates the horror of how famous women have been treated since the 90s.
