Anom652147A campfire gathering of authors past and present unwind with classic horror story retellingsA midnight fire pit brings together authors modern and classic to retell their famous horror stories in a subversive comedic style amongst their likewise subversive peers. “Submitted for the Approval of the Midnight Pals” has a cast and sound effects reminiscent of classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons, but definitely the type of humor and self-awareness suitable for Adult Swim programs. It’s a mix of vintage and modern in more ways than one, featuring as it does authors from the 1800s such as Mary Shelley to present day Stephanie Meyers. Who may both be sitting around the same fire. As I got used to the mix, I began to appreciate the outlandish humor, which feels as though you are watching your favorite authors go streaking. Some episodes also go into a bit more depth and nuance for a good change of pace. Check out the show notes of each episode for additional trivia and references. Content warning: mature themes, suggestive and expletive language.

yr bro ShaneThis is greatGreat performances, lots of fun. You don’t need to be super online to get the humor. Despite the name it feels a little more like Muppet Babies/Wishbone for adults. Obscurer references are dotted in like Easter eggs but feel delightful, not alienating. More please!

DeumenkiNostalgic laughs of terror for daysAs a huge Horror fan I absolutely love seeing these takes on some of the biggest names from my childhood intro to the genre. This show really is the most respectful piece of fan service for an 80s-90s kid out there. Grab some snacks, get spooked, have a laugh, and feel like a kid again. Butterfinger BBs and Surge sadly not included.

jlmooreMy Sides Ache From LaughingThis series is so cleverly scripted and acted. I’m not usually a person who laughs out loud, but I have to listen to this in solitude, because I’m known for freaking out my wife with random bouts of loud laughter. It’s not just the jokes though. It’s all the subtext of the authors in the way they’re portrayed. The writers clearly have an excellent grasp on the source material and their original creators. (And I deeply approve of all the satire, and the abuse they heap on controversial individuals. Looking at you, HP Lovecraft.) Brilliant. Just epically brilliant. Special hats off to their season finale, in which Hailey Piper knocks it out of the park as She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.
