    Loving this pod
Easy science-adjacent listening. Jesse knows a lot of stuff !

    Great đź‘Ťđź‘Ť
A perfect semi-scripted but tightly formatted show of topical discussion with room for additional insights and revelations. Daring to tackle the topics no other geology podcast does. Been listening since granite counter tops. Elated with the return from the hiatus and cementing my fan-ship ever since. Rock on flannel cast. -Your arboreal nerd fan.

Very little information here. Too much bantering, sounds more like Waynes world than a serious scientific podcast. Hard to believe you guys are geologist.

    Banter is excruciating
I’m an environmental science student and I wanted to learn more about the formation of the Sierra Nevada Mountains as I am writing a paper on the range. I wanted to love this podcast but had to suffer through 20 min of banter before a word was said about the topic. Then 2 sentences in, they got sidetracked with questioning elevation sickness or being hungover. These guys just love to listen to themselves talk and are so disorganized, it is like listening to frat boys who happen to know something about geology. There are people far more knowledgeable with better delivery out there. I ended up googling the rest.

    Men only
Maybe worth a listen if you have a identify as a straight man. Disrespectful to a guest who happens to be a woman. If you’re a woman in geology, this podcast holds everything you don’t like about geology and men in science.

    Every other week
Hi guys, I love your podcast. I know you are going to every other week for the semester…why not bring back a few of your favorite early podcasts to fill in and keep us tuning in? Keep tackling those subjects that no one else will. BH

Too many facts. Not enough discussion of their relevance
If I wanted a collection of statistics, I could do a quick Google search. This podcast needs more discussion of ideas and concepts behind the fact. Also, cut the banter at the beginning, please. It’s just babble

    Dismal Failure
I am genuinely interested in Appalachian Geology and when I found the Geology Flannelcast episode on it, I was excited to give it a listen. I got in my truck for my morning commute and after about 20 minutes I was so angry, I had to pull over and change the episode. I would estimate that out of the 20 minutes I listened, there was less than 5 minutes of actual cohesive topical information. It’s insanely tangential and disorganized. Way to much banter, side talk, and quibbling over terminology. A dismal excuse for a podcast episode, a disappointment for the field of Geology, and a massive failure especially in the area of Appalachian Geology. This is an area of study which could offer loads of value for listeners, if only the presenters could quell their nonsensical ramblings enough to get a coherent message across. One star for the attempt.

    Love this podcast!
Entertaining and educational… Love the banter between these guys.

    Too munch silly talk
Great info if you can sort it out through all the silly banter.

    Informative and fun
How can you not like “Elephants per second” as a measuring scale. And I used 176 EPM as a distance scale. (Elephants per mile) Thanks for what you do

    Geologizing
Are they nerds? Yup! Are they geologist? Seems likely. Is it worth a listen? Absolutely.

    Fabulous show!!!
I love this podcast and my partner wants a flannel. You out beat the enthusiasm of common decent podcast
  • Juddjxv
    Wanted to like it
As a hydrogeologist, I really wanted to like this podcast. I tried multiple episodes and listened with my partner, but we both agreed that it was super disorganized and hard to listen to. I can’t tell if there are 3 or 30 different people contributing to the conversation but it sounds hectic and is hard to follow. And dear god these guys think they’re HILARIOUS... I love a good pun but the jokes are so awful and forced.
  • Heuehrbs
    Disappointing
As a woman in geology I am disappointed in this podcast. Specifically, I was so interested in the Shannon George episode but it was a total let down. It’s actually painful to hear all the men interrupt Ms. George trying to discuss the P.G. exams… I cringed the entire time. Why even have her on the episode? She barely spoke and every time she did she was interrupted. Also the mansplaining……… Ugh. I think the entire show needs a revamp and to bring in new, diverse personalities.

    Love it!
As a geoscience major, thank you for this podcast! Super interesting material and it always makes me feel more confident about my geology knowledge. I like to listen to ones that correspond to topics in my classes and it makes the learning a lot more fun!

    Needs a Good Editor!
I love geology, and I wanted to like this podcast, but so many things are wrong with it. First, please scrap the musical intro; it’s awful. Second, please introduce yourselves right at the beginning of the podcast. I have no clue who you are. Please edit out stuff like talking about local weather and trying to pronounce Icelandic names. I’m listening to the podcast for geology content, and to be honest, it doesn’t matter to me if it snowed at your house the day you recorded the podcast. Determine who your audience is. Are you talking to people who haven’t taken Geology 101, people who explore geology every weekend, or people in the field? I get the impression you don’t know who you’re talking to. The podcast often feels unorganized. Sometimes you have some kind of vague outline for the podcast, but you sometimes present information out of order, skip important points, or talk over each other.
  • Kelc777
    Educational and I literally lol
I have followed from the beginning but just figured out how to leave a review. It’s like I’m sitting in a room with them hanging out talking about geo stuff. Love them so much. Jesse cracks me up

    These guys are..
    ..great.
  • geokaelin
The geology podcast I’ve been looking for!!
I graduated with a geology degree last spring and have been dearly missing long nights in the geo lab, chatting with friends about cool geologic concepts. Luckily, this podcast has filled the void! The perfect combination of informative and casual.

    Entertaining way to learn
I love this podcast! I started listening to generate gift ideas for a geologist in my life, but the hosts have such a great style that now, I’m hooked.
  • susheefish
    Love it!
I really like this podcast. I am a catch all nerd (rather than specifically a geology nerd) and these guys do a good job of explaining most of technical stuff in laymen’s terms. They do ramble a bit, but I am listening for fun, not a formal education, so it works for me. Glad I happened upon this show during its renaissance.
  • Hoost08
    Great podcast
So interesting...I listened to all the episodes like 4 years ago when I was working on my deck and when I finished the deck their podcast hiatus began. This year I started to expand the deck and low and behold they started the podcast up again! I think I’m just gonna keep working on my deck so we’ll be able to count on them to keep it going.

    Like old friends
I initially found this podcast when I decided I wanted to learn more about geology. I was really pleased when the guys returned after a long absence. Not only are the three geologists featured in this podcast extremely knowledgeable in their field, they bring an interesting range of research and work experience to bear when discussing different topics. The thing I like the most though is pretty simple: this is clearly a group of friends who enjoy each other’s company finding a way to stay in touch. The stories and humor always keep things light and you get the sense that even though these three are experts that they don’t take themselves too seriously.
  • bubbiyebba
    Excellent
I’m so happy these guys are back! They make geology so interesting! Their early episodes have poor sound quality, so just don’t start there.
  • Phil-USC
    Best Geology Program Around
These three studs have figured out a way to make even the daulest of geological topics interesting. Every Ma or so they will release a podcast that is meant to involve a specific geological topic. While it does often take a while to reach the topic, the sophmoric banter along the way is beyond enjoyable.

    A casual learning experience
I've been a science nerd most of my life. In the past several years earth science has captured my interest, and I love consuming every morsel of information I can, and these guys are a veritable banquet of information. Other reviewers have stated it perfectly; I feel like I'm sitting at a pub with some geology heavyweights, and every round of drinks spawns another interesting, and often off the wall, topic of conversation. I say heavyweights, but one thing that I greatly admire is that they don't put on airs, and will say that they may not know a lot concerning something that isn't in their "area". But you know they've touched on it in their prior education. This geology flannelcast weaves a comfortable fabric (see what I did there) in which I can comfortably pick up on knowledge and be a wee bit more aware of this world, and universe, I am in.

    Needs tremendous improvement
Its really a bummer how off topic these guys get. You look at the title of the podcast and think its going to actually be about what it says, but they can never seem to stay on topic. Too many non sequiturs that have NOTHING to do with "Granite Countertops" etc. Its incredibly painful as a Geologist to listen to these guys spout off comments about drugs and irrelevant topics. The overall quality of the casts are horrendous as well, the Skype recording, or whatever they do, makes it incredibly hard to maintain a thought due to the spotiness of the actual stream.
  • Steve at Starsend
    Every episode is interesting
I enjoy these guys a lot, and look forward to every episode. And looking at the titles of the earlier ones, every one of them looks interesting - I'm going to go back and listen to them all.
  • Adityanav
    It's surprisingly entertaining...I guess
I wrote this review because the flannelcast people told me to write it. Geology rocks...
  • briznit
Not a source for real discussion.
These guys ramble on... ALOT. It's already 1+ hour long, but they only discuss a few geological topics and do not go in depth. The rest of the time they are giggling and carrying on. Not much progression from their very first podcast. Also, it sounds like they are reading a Wikipedia page when they answer your questions. There's also a lot of "really? I didn't know that..." These guys are probably fun to hang out with IRL, but not they are not your source for geological discussions. It's too bad because there's not many geology podcasts to choose from.
  • Scaston23
    The schist
This podcast is truly fun, nerdy, informative, and fills a basin of need for publicly available geologic discussion. The guys are funny and seemingly full of "fun-facts". From basic geology to current events, the guys are leaving no stone unturned.
  • Hargadine
    Just a good time
I started out listening as a review for the FG and PG exam, and would listen while I travel for work. But now that I've finished the exam, I listen because its entertaining and gives great information.
  • rocklogic777
    geology authentica
as a geology enthusiast i love this podcast. this really reminds me of a geology version of the former techtv. truly authentic and charming!
  • Jrnnpppoo
    makes me snicker at work
I'm an actual geologist, and I listen to this podcase while I do mindless data processing at work. I often find myself giggling to myself in the cube farm and wonder if the other geos think I'm crazy. This podcast makes my 9 hour workday much more tolerable. And to the reviewers that said these guys don't know what they're talking about: That's just mean. They're PhD students (as am I), and at this level you get a little specialized, so of course they don't know every detail of every topic discussed. Personally impressed by their breadth.
  • Clymene Haploa
    Flanelcast
This is a great podcast! These guys obviously love geology but don't take themselves too seriously. The content is interesting and relevant yet it's presented in a way that is very laid back and un-intimidating.
  • Nate U..
    Thumbs up
A good balance of personality and education. I very much like the casual vibe. I wish they were all recording from the same room, but even over Skype the dynamic still works nicely. Looking forward to lots more episodes.
  • Travito34
    Best Geology Podcast Out There
These guys are funny as well as very informational. They may not put out new content at a regular rate but it's really nice when they do! Being a geology undergrad student in Colorado, I find these topics relatable to things I've learned in my geology classes. Hope they continue to do what they do!

    Ooooo
Their minds move with the majesty and wander of the pneumatic tubes at the post office. Where are the T-shirts?

    Minerals are Fun
This is a great way to present geology. It's light, quick, funny, and informative. I was skeptical that it could work without visual aid; I was wrong. I wish I had this podcast 12 years ago when I took "Geology 101" taught by an old professor who had no interest in teaching novices.
  • JudoDude
    Fantastic!
If you're interested in learning about geology from experts then you've found the right podcast. Hosts explain complex topics in terms that everyone can understand. I've learned a ton.
  • Jabittan
    Fun Educational Show!
The guys are a bit goofy, but thats exactly what you want from some science brainiacs! Lots of fun information about all things geology!
  • Michael M. K.
    Interesting and fun
Finally a geology podcast that is informative and where the hosts are clearly excited about what they're talking about. They're also open about what they know and what they don't know and are open to adjusting what they say when corrected. The vibe is similar to Science... Sort Of, but all geology all the time. Perhaps these guys should team up with Brachiolope, seems like it would be a good fit.

Quit gettin' high before you Podcast
Well, the name is right. I picture a couple good ole boys sittin' down to discuss stuff they know almost nothing about. A lot of "I think", "maybe", "I'm not sure" and TONS of giggling. The constant kind of giggling you hear when your stoner buddies have had too much weed and everything is hilarious. I hate it. It's not Educational Geology as much as a brief overview in front of Google. Probably great to those that know nothing about Geology and want to learn a little without doing the research themselves.
  • Alzer9
Best Geology Podcast - for what it's worth...
Could be thoroughly improved, but no one is doing any better. I'm not totally new to this subject, but I always learn some new things. The banter is OK, I occasionally lol. Could use more structure though.
  • GeologistTaylor
    Fun listen
It is a Gneiss listen for all science lovers. Really enjoy the casual nature of it.
  • noah.ns
    Love the casual style
Finally, a podcast for us geology lovers who want to talk (hear) about geology outside of the classroom. There isn't much out there geology-wise, guys, so please keep it going for us folks who need more. And keep going on current news, too! :D
  • Nickname 12849202
    Love it
Great for geology lovers and science needs in general.
  • ccexperiment
    almost juvenile
I love the title, "flannelcast". I've listened to 2 flannelcasts and realized these guys, though kind of funny, seem very limited in their knowledge without knowing it.
