Wolf 359

4,270

Life's not easy for Doug Eiffel, the communications officer for the U.S.S. Hephaestus Research Station, currently on Day 448 of its orbit around red dwarf star Wolf 359. He's stuck on a scientific survey mission of indeterminate length, 7.8 light years from Earth. His only company on board the station are stern mission chief Minkowski, insane science officer Hilbert, and Hephaestus Station's sentient, often malfunctioning operating system Hera. He doesn't have much to do for his job other than monitoring static and intercepting the occasional decades-old radio broadcast from Earth, so he spends most of his time creating extensive audio logs about the ordinary, day-to-day happenings within the station. But the Hephaestus is an odd place, and life in extremely isolated, zero gravity conditions has a way of doing funny things to people's minds. Even the simplest of tasks can turn into a gargantuan struggle, and the most ordinary-seeming things have a way of turning into anything but that. Wolf 359 is a radio drama in the tradition of Golden Age of Radio shows. Take one part space-faring adventure, add one part character drama, and mix in one part absurdist sitcom, and you get Wolf 359.

    Really good. BUT
This audiodrama is actually so interesting, it keeps you hooked but the humor is definitely dated… given the comedy is 10 years old im sure this was hilarious back in the day but not so much now

    Great
This is a great podcast. I think it’s a lot better before the other characters come in and before it started focusing on singular long term story instead of random singular stories every episode. I also think the VA for Kepler is bad for that role. Doesn’t come across as an authority at all. Also the amount of drawn out laughter and the slow clapping is sooo overused and annoying.

    Amazing stuff
I love this podcast! The characters are wonderful and the storytelling is amazing. The only downsides are occasional case of “to close to the mic” and vaguely similar season types it is a great podcast. Worth all the time it takes to listen 👍

Funny, entertaining, immersive, etc. I loved it.

    One of the best!
This is my favorite podcast ever. I have yet to find another scripted fiction podcast I’ve been able to get attached to like this one. I listened to it over a year ago and I still feel emotions towards the characters. I’m ready for my second listen through 🤙🏼

I should’ve hated it, binged it in a week instead
The writing has a couple of same-voice repetitive issues that a solid editor should’ve noticed. Take a shot every time a character blurts something emotional, pauses to breathe, and goes “look….” And sums up the situation in a snarky fashion- and you’ll have destroyed your liver by the end. But I did really like the action adventure intrigue elements- especially as someone who doesn’t like action adventure or most of the character archetypes. This was not made to my tastes whatsoever and I still really enjoyed it and consider it my favorite scifi podcast to date. And Hera is one of my favorite uses of an AI character point blank period. Solid character writing, left me wanting more in a good way.

    Great sound design and music
I love this podcast because I’m legally blind and I don’t have to try to picture things. I just wonder where I can listen to this music. This is something that I would put on in the back round

Ok, so; I’m a a LOT of podcast fandoms! The Penumbra podcast, Welcome to NightVale, The Magnus Archives, The Magnus Protocol, Camp Here & There, The SCP Archives, Mayfield Watchers Society, Trap Street, and Redwood Bureau. And OMFGGG I LOVE ITTTTT AAAAAA I listened to this originally because while I was studying for my 11th grade classes, but AAAA my autistim went BING BING BING!!! I love drawing my concept ideas of what they look like!! (Especially Cutter, Minkowski, and Jacoby) AAAA I keep on trying to type how I feel but my brain can’t put it into words!! Also, speaking of Jacoby, when I found out he was gay, that hit like a truck, as a transgender male (FtM) and being gay, that hit HARRRDDDDD I already related to him but OMFGGG!!! I’m so Jacoby, Eiffel, and Cutter coded!!!! IDK how that works but AAAAAAA

Fun, doesn’t make a lot of sense
The acting is mostly pretty good. The charters make consistently bad decisions based on emotions that are hard to believe in. Cartoonishly evil bad guys. And yet it does keep me listening.

This show lives up to it's fame!
I've heard a lot about this show and decided to give it a try. O my! It's just as good as everyone says! Humor is great, music is amazing and sound design is suuuper cool! The actors and the whole crew did an amazing job!
  • Whovianimeniac
    Beautifully written and acted
I had this on my radar for awhile before I got to it. I’m not really one who is into space stories, but this podcast had some fandoms that I’m in recommend it highly. And now I can see why. It’s a beautiful story made to encapsulate the best and worst of humanity, and you often manage to feel a form of sympathy or appreciation for some of the more ‘evil’ characters. This is a very story driven podcast that starts to get truly interesting around episode 11, and which gifts you with an amazing cast of morally complex and interesting characters. A great story with an amazing end.

Awesome show! One of the best I’ve ever listened to.
I’ve had this show in my list for ages, finally got around to it the other day. WOW, so good! I haven’t made it all the way thru yet, but I’m already really bummed it ended after 4 seasons. Great story, solid twists, great voice acting and sound design. Give it a listen.

    Classic Great among Podcasts
One of the first podcasts I listened to thanks to recommendations on Reddit. An absolutely great story that has gained status as one of the few pieces of media I keep returning to!

    Amazing
SUCH a fun, hilarious, cozy, and charming show. I’m so glad I started listening to it. The characters are all lovely, and I adore their dynamics. Great audio work too, it feels so real even when it’s extremely silly.

    Quickly became my fave podcast!
I just started listening, and now I’m at season 4! I love this pod. The characters and storyline are well done and the twists and turns in the story are really great!

    Good stuff!!
What a captivating story!! I can’t stop listening. Never been a big reader because of reading and attention problems. This is a game changer for me !! Love sci fy and fantasy stories . Really lose my self in the stories and picture it all. Gets me through work ! Thank u can’t wait to see where this story goes!

New Fan. Took a season, but I’m hooked.
Since falling in love with Mission to Zyxx, I’ve had high standards. Initially the show made me wonder what’s was so good about it and tempted me to fall asleep (especially with the calm, spacey intro music that starts every episode). Due to my friend’s recommendation, I decided to stick with it to see how it improved. I’m glad I did. Season 2, here we go! The plot and characters do get better…the acting becomes more believable, and it gets you at the edge of your seat. ✨

    Soooo many ads
I would give literally anything to have this podcast go back to being as free. But they never had a patreon, or ever asked in their episodes while I was listening for listener support. And now there’s ads in the beginning, middle, and end. I used to listen to this to fall asleep and now its just god awful more ad then show. Amazing writing, great podcast. Ruined by ads. Would have loved to be a supporter to prevent that but they didn’t even try that option.

Wolf 359 is smart, exciting, occasionally hysterical, and deeply sad. There’s nothing quite like it.

    Great story and characters!
I loved the first seasons and was really happy to see the whole thing through. The writing is very good and it is a compelling story. I struggled in the later seasons and lots of Season 4 with the voice acting. As more characters were added in S3 it was hard for me to track who was speaking. Newer characters in S4 were more distinct, but I was still confused from time to time. Could just me me and a bad ear, though. Overall, really good.

The show I always come back to
Wolf 359 is, hands down, my favorite podcast of all time. I don’t listen to much Sci-fi, yet Wolf 359 kept me intrigued since the first episode. Personally, I found my second listen to be even more enjoyable- seeing everything laid out and fall into place was SO satisfying, all of the little hints coming into play!

Great podcast. Hilbert was my favorite character. I do think that Hilbert was waaaaay more jolly and light hearted in season one than in season 2 or 3. I like jolly Hilbert better than grumpy Hilbert. Did anyone else notice this?

    Too much arguing
Definitely not my favorite podcast … One thing that really made me dislike this podcast was just how much the characters argued! Now i can understand, they’re in a spaceship they really want to get off, of course you’re going to be irritated with your crew mates, but holy crap it felt like they never stopped! It seemed like the only way a big thing/plot point could be through arguing, all the characters get into an argument, somebody accidentally reveals something big while they’re yelling, everybody’s surprised and then they talk about that big thing that was revealed. Plus, besides that, it just felt like a LOT of arguing in general, as i said earlier, totally understandable that all the characters are annoyed with each other, and maybe it’s just the way i was raised, but i feel like they could’ve done something else to solve their issues! Another thing, some lines are quite cheesy 😅 If Doug says something cheesy, i don’t really mind it because he is just like that. One thing i really liked was Doug’s and Minkovski’s friendship, very sweet!

    Possible Shout out?
Hey I’d like to say, by far one of the most exiting, intelligent and not to mention downright hilarious at times live pod/radio shows I’ve heard to date, really enjoyed listening to Wolf 359. That said, I was wondering, as I start up watching star trek deep space 9 I had forgotten the base that the surgically modified Jean Luke Picard attacked just pior to the first episode, was called Wolf 359. Any coincidence there guys? Just asking…. Anyhow loved the show would recommend it to anyone who enjoys sci-fi literature or story content that will surprise you! Thanks so much for putting it out there guys! 2018 - p.s. 3/23/2023- I’m currently re-listening, and i must say that it has aged well! Even more nuance and subtle details have revealed themselves on the second time around, and the foreknowledge of what’s to come does not spoil the experience in the least. Thanks to all of you who created this masterful presentation.

    A must listen
Funny with a overarching story and great memorable characters. This took me on a journey and I’m still sad it’s over. The story unravels a little slowly in the beginning, but its worth it. One of my favorites ❤️

    Perfection
After listening to literally every single episode of this podcast, I really wish there was more. This podcast has such a good story and evolves so much as you go along. I couldn’t have asked for a better audio drama to enjoy while I work and go on trips. If anyone is looking for entertainment, I highly recommend this podcast. Thank you Wolf 359 team, for this entire show, and I hope your lives are well.

    Vacuum the apt
I agree with Sharkie’s review. A bit too upbeat and silly at first, but I wasn’t going to stop vacuuming to find a new podcast.. Point being, a mere 599 sq. ft. later, the tone had completely shifted to a fast-paced I HAVE TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS near-future drama with characters I felt like I’d known forever. A+ sound mixing. No volume adjust needed. LOVE the nod to “Canaveral.” Perfect villain(s) and villainous voice acting..it’s almost like you know… I wish that voice actor would read all my work texts Much love from the original space coast USA 🫡😎🇺🇸🚅 *Challenger forever*

Didn’t love beginning but got really good after 10 episodes
Absolutely fantastic show with really compelling characters. It did start off kind of rough, in my opinion, because it was very wacky and lighthearted. The tone does change in the show and the characters are developed really well over time, it just needs a little while to get there.

Very bingeable, needed a better hook at beginning and can be cheesy at some points but overall very entertaining and I would 100% recommend

    LISTEN IMMEDIATELY
Drifting back in to the reviews after my sixth listen-through, it’s great. It simply is. All other podcasts are measured against the towering pillar of wolf 359 and they all come up short in some way. This is my comfort podcast food. This is the way television should be written instead of the bilge that we have now. This is the best of dialogue and old radio serials. This is the pinnacle of character development. This is the achievement of a generation. It really should be more popular.

    Best Podcast
This is my 3rd time listening to this podcast. I love it so much. It always makes me cry in several parts and that’s ok. I will never stop listening to it :)

    Science fiction at its best
My daughter turned me onto this program which she's listened to several times. The plot twists come with no warning. The characters are believable and engaging. Character driven show with great sci-fi action. Great family listening. I look forward to each episode!

    Best Narrative Fiction Podcast
This podcast is far and away the best fiction podcast I’ve listened to. The characters are well developed, wonderful storyline and thought provoking plots. I also love how the podcast never takes itself too seriously and has plenty of comic relief. This is a true gem and I can’t recommend it enough to others!

    Amazing !
These reviews about smoking and a burp ? Calling this a Star Trek? LOL! Those reviews are bogus and didn’t give this podcast a chance. This was one of the best podcasts I’ve ever listen to, the character development was amazing. I’d give it 6 stars if I could!
  • Badandboujee2300
    This one grew on me
Like others have stated, I wasn't super stoked in the beginning. But then some time around the plant monster, I started really loving it. When I first started, someone wrote a review that said "it starts off silly and gets dark." And that is so true. The storyline took such a different turn and I actually felt sad knowing I was at the finale. The introduction of new characters was amazing and I really loved (most of) them. I became so emotionally involved with this podcast. So I came here to say, don't give up on it. It might take a few episodes, or even seasons, but this podcast becomes amazing. Bravo everyone.

Smoking in Star Trek? What garbage.
Lost me at contraband cigarettes. I can’t stand this new Star Trek. In a future without poverty or hungry and medical advancements you expect me to believe that people are still stupid enough to smoke?
  • JaneBerlinH
    Stick with it!
It didn’t happen right away- in fact- I would try starting it, become annoyed, and then switch it off …many times!!.. BUT once during a long drive I made it through the first five episodes and before I knew it- I was waaaaay hooked! I binged the entire thing and -to my surprise- by the end of the podcast I found that I had become attached to the very character who annoyed me so much at the start. This podcast snuck up on me and stole my attention. Thank you so much for the hours of easy fun for my brain. Ps. I still don’t love the guy with the accent. Why does it sound so very very fake to me? Am I the one who’s wrong here? There is no way that that is what a Russian accent sounds like right?!

    Minkowski not MinCOWski
After years of listening to podcasts and audio books this one is at the top of my list. The voice acting is phenomenal, the characters are lovable, the story is at times funny and always compelling, but there are moments that are so beautiful they are like a punch to the heart. This was the podcast that I never wanted to end, but like all the best things in life, it eventually must. I feel enriched for having experienced it, and for that I am grateful.

    Jacobi isn’t Jacobi
Think about it How did he survive the SPOILER in the finale? That doesn’t make sense! And the SPOILER Jacobi from episode 42 could just keep regenerating because of the SPOILER powers.
