This show is always good, but the interview with Carolyn Dawn Johnson is so full of incredible advice. Thanks so much for what you do.

    Thoughtful conversations
Scott and Paul have a gift for teasing out compelling insights from songwriters, whether hugely famous or lesser known. And their pre-interview chats are always good for interesting analysis and laughs.

    Best Duff interview
I’m a forever GNR fan and this is the best interview with Duff I’ve ever heard. Great job. Informative to hear his writing process and influences.

    Great Podcast!!
As a fan of song writers this show is a welcome companion on my daily walks. Love to hear the stories from the story tellers themselves and then go and listen or re-listen to the songs!! This is a great listen !

    Chip Taylor (Episode 21, 10/20/15)
Amazingly thorough interview with songwriter and gambler Chip Taylor (born James Wesley Voight) referencing his huge catalogue of songs including #1 hits Wild Thing and Angel of the Morning, and his exceptional brothers (actor Jon Voight and geologist Barry Voight who predicted Mount St Helens eruption.). I came upon this podcast accidentally while searching for a different songwriter and was blown away by the professionalism and thoroughness of hosts Scott Bomar and Paul Duncan. They took the time to learn ever relevant aspect of Chip Taylor’s amazing career and used that to bring the listener on an intimate journey through his songs, interlaced with Chip’s recollections and motivations. I highly recommend the Song Craft: Spotlight on Songwriters podcast and look forward to hearing all of their 200 episodes. Matt Mannino

    Great Will Hoge interview!
First time I’d listened to your guys. Very much love your interview style: professional with some fun. Great show!

    Love this!
Just stumbled across this and gave it a try. I started at Episode 46 because that’s what popped up. I have listened through episode 52 so far. Even when I think it might be boring, like Tom Russell (cowboy music), I’m totally captivated and now want to go on-line and find some of his music to listen too!! Great job, guys! Oh, and I finally took the time to find my way to episode #1, so I’ll go back to the beginning now. 3/20/2022 Still loving this and listening in the order it was released. I don’t want to binge and catch up, but eventually I will catch up. I just finished Episode 154. In December of last year I finally became a Patreon supporter of the show. Scott and Paul seem like close friends now!

    Inspirational!
This podcast is amazing! I started listening to the episodes with songwriters I knew, but I’ve been going back and listening to everything. And learning so much. The hosts get such great insights out of their (often legendary) guests. I can’t recommend it more highly.

    Fantastic!!!
Song Craft is a fantastic listen. I highly recommend it to both songwriters and non-songwriters.

    Both educational and enlightening

    It’s not all about you
Finally caught up with your Elvis Costello fanboi interview. Loved the interview, hated your intro. It is not all about your bucket lists. Gave you an extra star because I enjoyed the Christmas Wrapping podcast, though you really need to edit interviews. Lots of rambling.

    Turn These Into A Book!
As a singer/songwriter, I’ve always loved reading about and hearing the stories of other songwriters, how they wrote their first songs, and their personal process. Like others, I love talking songs. I love the humility, humor, and the expertise these guys have acquired as songwriters and interviewers to make this such a great podcast. I only have about 6 podcasts in my library, and this one is my favorite! Only one request. Years ago, Performing Songwriter put out “Song,” based on their interviews with writers over the years. I’ve read and re-read that book. I think you all should publish your own volumes of these stories from some of the most legendary songwriters. I’d purchase them for my library, and I’m certain many others would as well! Keep ‘em coming, guys!

    Best songwriting podcast
Funny, smart, and so educational. I have very low expectations of men on podcasts, but Scott and Paul amaze me with their ability to listen and ask great questions. I’m especially impressed with their depth of knowledge and appreciation of woman songwriters. The first episode I listened to was with Emily Saliers and you could tell Scott and Paul are real fans! Love it so much. Don’t miss this podcast if you love music.

One of the best podcasts I’ve ever heard!
I’m so happy I found this podcast. I hadn’t found a music related podcast that I liked until this. Hats off to the hosts/interviewers, they are masters at asking questions and then letting the artist talk reveal things and perspectives that I have never heard. It is obvious that these guys know their stuff. I love their style. I appreciate that they are not in love with their own voices and don’t spend time attempting to amuse us. I find myself talking to friends about it frequently and I like the variety of artists. Very well done. They get right.
  • sontabe123
    Love this series
The interviewers are fabulous and the songwriters are inspiring with great songwriting nuggets.
  • EvanjRoberts
Focused on the songwriter not the writing process
It’s a shame we live in a subjective world. Some objective tips on this would be great but missing.
  • davesword
Scott and Paul are continually enthused. Great interviews.
This three section program make a place for meaningless laughs, hard facts and thoughtful interviews. I believe they make an effort to ask new questions while pulling the life stories from the song writers. Their enthusiasm is contagious. Thank you Scott and Paul. D-

    Mistitled Show
The episodes are very interesting, but they probably spend less than 5% of the show actually talking about the craft of songwriting. Maybe they should change the title of the show, or maybe they could talk more about song craft. It’s a good show nonetheless.

    Gold Standard
Paul and Scott are doing amazing work on this podacast. It's an absolute pleasure to listen to, with great production and editing, and their depth of research often surprises the songwriters they are interviewing. Absolutely top-notch professional show on every level. Many thanks to Paul and Scott and the scores of songwriters who have agreed to share their time and their stories with them and us.

    Great Shows
I’ve listened to 4 or 5 shows so far, and all of them are remarkable. I just finished the conversation with Mel Tillis, and what a cool guy. I thought he was just tough when I read the date the show was released, but then you said it was recorded in 2015. But great work guys, very inspirational. Thank you! Ps. Do you have Ian Tyson on your list to interview?
  • Topher Graham
    Great Chris Barron Interview.
Such an insightful man. Wearing his opinion and his art on his sleeve. Thanks for your interview and thanks to Chris for his honesty. As a songwriter myself- and a piss poor guitarist - it’s very cool to hear the many ways it is done. I followed the path of poetry writer to playing guitar to the poetry.

I’m walking around at work trying not to laugh, but just losing it... Too friggin funny. You made my day. It was a tie. Thanks, JB

    Great job!!!
This is the most enjoyable podcast. From the history to the behind the song aspects that are presented in Scott and Paul’s very down to earth interview style. Thanks for a great podcast guys. Keep up the good work!!

Invaluable conversations. I love this podcast!
When I need a dose of motivation and good conversation about great songcraft, I always come here. Thank you for this podcast!
  • SingItBack
    Fantastic
This podcast is nothing short of excellent. For anyone who loves music, it’s amazing hearing longform interviews with songwriters- many of whom (particularly those who primarily write for other artists) we don’t often get a chance to hear from. There’s a timelessness to the interviews, so an added bonus is being able to listen to the older episodes without them feeling dated or suddenly irrelevant. Hope this one keeps going for a long time.

    Phenomenal Podcast
If you are a songwriter, this is a "must listen to" podcast. Great interviews with well thought out questions, from guys who do their research. Thank you for a valuable, educational, and entertaining podcast gentlemen.

    raw meat to gobble up
Man, this podcast is killer. Just listened to Sonny Curtis. Action packed. From “I Fought the Law” to Leo Sayer’s "More Than I Can Say”. I’ve written a few songs myself. And after a long day co-writing, the thing writers love more than anything is to recount the play-by-play of the session. This is raw meat to gobble up if that’s your thing.

    Who wouldn't want to listen?!
The best podcast on the internet in my opinion. Being from Nashville and moving away (and returning back home) I have realized and never take for granted the soul of Nashville's songwriting community and how interesting the stories behind the music we hear on the radio, and the music talented writers create that never sees the light of day! This podcast is like a front row seat at the Bluebird or Listening Room in Nashville without leaving your house. I always learn something about songs old and new. This podcast has something for everyone - music lover or not.

    For Doobie Fans
Very insightful interview. While I am a longtime Doobies fan--saw them for about the 15th time last night, the interviewers themselves were great. Will subscribe now! Thanks

    Inside The Songwriter
This is an awesome podcast! I learned how the extraordinary music and lyric comes from normal people who work, using their unique insight and talent, to create entertaining, enjoyable and memorable songs.
  • OzHamilton
    Very Entertaining
Scott B. Bomar and Paul Duncan are always well prepared with the kind of questions that must have required extensive research. Safe to say I am looking forward to the next episode.

    A great listen for anyone
If you are in the business or a music lover, every single one of these podcasts is enlightening! You will not be able to stop once you start listening. Thank you Paul and Scott for bringing the inside out!

    interviews with great songwriters
these guys are great interviewers......they do their homework well before interviewing songwriters. If you want to learn how the great songs were written by these wonderful writers, then this podcast is for you......

    awesome
I have always been fascinated by songwritting, this series is so great. Paul and Scott do such a great job of research each interview is packed with tons of information and back stories. Great for anyone who loves music!

    Worth Listening
Riveting. All the guests have been interesting to listen to. Their stories are very personal and they are just down-to-earth real people. I grew up with these songs but knew nothing about how they came to be. Now I do.
  • EtheSpike
    Great for any music lover
I'm not a songwriter, but I love all kinds of music. I really like this podcast because I get so much "behind the scenes" stories about songs I remember. These songwriters have done amazing work, and worked with so many great musicians. Thanks for putting this show together!
  • Nazir
    Holy Crap that was good
Scott and Paul bring it. Get some crazy insight into songwriters' insight. I'm just blown away by how good that was. Please keep em coming.
  • Chris Pippin
    Very cool!!!
As a fledging songwriter, I find these talks very uplifting. You always wonder "how do they do it?". Now we can find out. It seems that it isn't such a hard thing after all to write. But finding that one diamond in the glass landfill might never come, but who cares, my music needs a voice!!! Thanks for bringing this to us!!!
  • Andrew454545
    Very interesting, well executed.
Great new podcast entry in the genre! Nice work.

    Great Dallas Frazier show!
Along with the great songs, there are so many elusive pieces of information here. I had no idea Dallas had a Portland connection! Looking forward to listening to the others.
  • jurassic +1
    A great listen.
The interviewers do killer job on research and preparation, but this is not an academic labor. Scott and Paul have the love of the true fan of the craft. The questions are informed and the song samples are really helpful. I'm hooked. The Spooner Oldham episode is pure gold. We songwriters have to support quality programming like this. Aces!
  • oldm1
    Excellent!
This podcast is great! It has previously unheard songs and information for the intense music fan but it also is really interesting for a general audience. Way to go you guys!
  • CaliElle
A must-listen if you're any kind of music lover
Wow, coming from a run-of-the-mill music fan such as myself, Songcraft really caught my ear. The show is very interesting, but not just from a "music insider" standpoint. It's obvious that Scott and Paul really know their stuff, but they've made it really accessible to anyone who likes music. Diehard music buffs will of course love the deep-dive into the guest that each episode provides, but there's something for everyone. For instance, the Jim Peterik interview brought back so many memories for me growing up with the songs of Survivor, but I learned so much about the man behind the music too. Scott and Paul really know how to bring out the stories. It's not just a Q&A, but more of a conversation, which I really appreciated. Their style (and the musical clips peppered in between each topic) kept me engaged and left me thoroughly impressed. Way to knock a podcast out of the park, guys. Looking forward to more.
