The Phoney & Call-y Podcast

320
Improv #170

Tony and Johnny are the best of friends…but they live on separate coasts! Luckily, they’ve been able to keep their long-distance relationship fresh and vital through frequent, soul-nourishing phone conversations. The Phoney & Call-y Show presents these phone calls to you: the lonely idiot, to delight in an entertaining blend of banter, introspection, bickering, and improv bits!*

*However, this podcast is not to be life-affirming, at all. Any relatable honesty Tony & Johnny display is purely for their own, therapeutic benefit. It’s not for you to feel better about your own life. That’s not what this is.

    This is comedy.
I love this show because it is comedy, and these guys are really funny. Please never stop making this show, ever. Tony is just as funny as Johnny, and Johnny is very very funny. Mommy’s Game is the stuff of nightmares.

    In mourning
Today is Monday. Another sad day with no new Phoney&Calley. A nation mourns.

I love this podcast. Anthony and John are both hilarious and intelligent improvers and hosts. I can’t recommend this podcast enough. 5 of the fattest stars to the Phoney & Call-y show!

    Sad!
I loved this podcast so much I listened to all of the episodes twice! Thanks for your work on it.

Phoney and Call-y will be missed.
You guys helped me through a rough year. Thanks to both of you for being so open and candid. You both expressed thoughts and feelings a lot of us have, but don’t often speak about. I found great comfort in listening to P&C each week. You both are so so funny. John, the theme song and final episode outro are amazing. Tony, the sound production really elevated the scenes and made them special. Thank you for sharing yourselves with us. Looking forward to whatever you do together, and individually, in the future. ❤️

Best podcast out there. Don’t know what I’d do if it were to end.

Easily the best post-UCB indie content
I’m sad to hear this show has come to a close! This is the only podcast I listen to as soon as a new episode drops every week. The entire series was a great run and will stand among some of my favorite short-lived comedy podcasts of all time. A standout episode for me was the fake clip show 30th episode. I will miss starting every week with Tony and Johnny’s gastrointestinal banter. I guess I will have to get real friends now!

Ran out of family members to interview
I guess they ran out of unfunny cousins and wives of friends and decided to give up. Can’t be much of a surprise…a couple of worn out former Kings Of Improv Hill realize (yet again) that you can’t just show up stoned wearing cargo shorts and flip flops to your show with absolutely no preparatory effort put in and expect people to continue coming to your shows. They certainly did it like that for years at UCB and it worked out just fine…as long as no one was getting paid that model worked perfectly. Buenas Noches boys. Have fun on the grind out there.

    The best vicarious friendship exercise
Best podcast, pretty much the only thing I’ve listened too in months. Only disappointment is that I’m all caught up and have to wait for more episodes, why couldn’t they have been doing this for longer? Five stars isn’t enough.

    Love this show
I’ve been a big Improv enthusiast for years and I’m always thirsty for better improv podcasts. I’ve got about five on rotation at any given time and this one is top of the charts! For a long time I have considered these comedians to be some of the best in the game. Tony does a great job editing the sounds for the scenes and Johnny’s game is always a treat to look forward to! Will not disappoint, five stars, do recommend, listen!

    More anal gel talk
This podcast is great, but I wish they would talk more about anal gel….man…the money I’d pay for that…I’d be so broke..

    Such a funny podcast!
These two comedy gems and improv legends are not only hillarious but also surprisingly open and relatable. Truly has become one of my favorite podcasts!

    Love my little phone-y show
Tony has every right to be upset that more respect isn’t put on his sound production efforts but he rages so verbosely and humorously it’s difficult not to troll him about it. I began listening around episode 40 but the rapport of these two hilarious old friends has had me go back and listen to all the episodes and it’s worth it for the whole series of Johnny’s Games, improv scenes, three-way interviews, and the inane-at-times philosophical discussions these two have.
  • mfkatz
    So fun
Tony and Johnny have a great friendship and it really comes through on the show. They are both so good at winding each other up. The high production improv scenes and Johnny’s game are great too.

    Human comedy
I love the friendship, the honesty, the history and sharing about stuff that I often relate to. Love the improv segments so much too and Johnny’s game is so much fun.
  • warpigsguy
    Great conversation
These guys are hilarious and insightful in odd sort of ways. The improv is top notch, even when it isn’t.
  • slamscharneckia
    Sweet Boyz
This show could stand some structure. Episodes tend to ultimately descend into unfunny amateur psycho-analysis between the two hosts. When they try to be funny they succeed but when they just chit-chat it becomes a slog. Guests don’t help much because they all get psycho-analyzed as well or it’s just straight up small talk about how they know or don’t know each other. Blah blah blah UCB blah blah blah. Johnny’s game and improv scenes are aces! It’s kinda like improv4humans if Matty B stopped trying. Five star!

    Oddly Comforting
I love to hear compatible arguing, which is a lot of what this is. Their honesty, love for one another, ease with guests, casualness, and Johnny’s Game are all beautiful components of this treasured show. I’ll listen until they stop making it!
  • elmattador78
Too funny not to listen to.
These two distinguished gentlemen manage to make me laugh out loud every show. Seriously, these are funny dudes. Give them a go and enjoy the thrill of listening to the audio and recording snafus, Anthony’s lactardness, John’s animal *love*, and the mind boggling traps of Johnny’s Game.
  • callme5551234
    …but it’s the charming kind
Bickering, fun stories, real talk, more bickering, great improv, guest interview (bickering included) and the cherry on top, Johnny’s Game. Love it

    The best
The amount of diarrhea these two are comfortable with is alarming, but if that’s what it takes to create such an incredible podcast who am I to be concerned.

    Hate hate hate
how great great great this show is. I play Johnnys game with friends. I have started considering eating my own boogers.
  • Dr Zhivago
I hope I die listening to this
Two of the best podcast guests doing their own show? This is the best and I hope they never stop. Johnny’s Game is very fun to play along to and Tony’s editing stings make this 5 star show 6 stars. I wish they were my dads.
  • bendi:bendo
    great show
Two great guys, very funny. Something for everyone. I’d like to take the rest of my review to respond to Tony’s beliefs about UFOs. Tony is wrong about UFOs. He thinks the dumbest explanation for them is humanoid aliens? I’d say both the hollow earth / high tech mole people theory and the HBC (Hollow Ball of Consciousness) theory make way less sense. Why does he keep theorizing about hollowness? HBC: Consciousness is realized through the physical processes in our brain. Consciousness cannot exist without something physical realize it. A meatball of consciousness would make more sense. Hollow earth theory: It’s way harder to live underground. You would need incredible technology to go into the earth and start a civilization. Therefore, in order for an incredibly advanced society underground to exist, you’d first need an incredibly advanced surface society. What evidence of an incredibly advanced surface society do we have? How do these mole people get from their hollow homes to the surface? It’s way more likely that sensors (camera/radar/sonar) are providing misleading information. Or non-hollow aliens.

    Great pod
Phoney and Call-y are two great friends, hilarious improvisers, and are super funny together. Seek this out for bits, jokes, improv scenes, and some great/terrible puns

Shaka, when the pods fell… First officer’s log, supplemental. I am sending a shuttlecraft to find Captain Picard and Lieutenant Worf, gambling that the Tamarians will sit tight rather than risk an exchange of phaser fire. We are still unsure how exactly the Captain and Lieutenant landed on Tamar, but it happened on their return trip back from correcting the timeline affected by the 21st century podcast, the Phoney

    Weirdly cathartic
The honesty in display in this podcast is absolutely a marvel, the level in which Tony and Johnny communicate their feelings to each other is outstanding and I wish I could be so honest with my own family. The audio drops and sound effects are excellent and the rapport between the two hosts is never uninteresting, wonderful podcast

    My new favorite
There are so many things to love about this podcast! Their banter makes me laugh all the time, you can tell they genuinely care about each other, and my favorite is how much Johnny laughs delightedly at his own game. Thank

    Great show
Written reviews count for more but it’s hard to articulate why I like this so much. ‘It makes me laugh,’ doesn’t seem sufficient . All I know is that I enjoy this podcast. I also enjoy spending money. So, this is clearly the sort of podcast that money spenders enjoy. I also like mattresses, socks, therapy and…cereal maybe? Delta gummies? Regardless it is funny. Give it a listen
  • Hello, Doiley!
    Listen to this podcast!
I love the conversations, the improv scenes, the layered sound design, the three-ways with friends. I for one would buy any stamps, mattresses, or website design templates advertised on this podcast so it is inconceivable that companies aren’t buying ad space yet. Thanks Anthony and John for this excellent podcast!

    Incredible Show
Two of my favorite comedians/improvisers/actors, I was so excited when they announced they’d be doing a show and it’s everything I wanted and everything you also want.

    The Pinnacle of Improvisational Podcasting
Some of the most genuine conversation you’ll ever hear, fun interviews, comedy improv and 3 rounds of Johnny’s Game where every correct answer is a pun. Really. What more do humans need?

They make me smile and laugh out loud. Smart and Sassy. I love the 3 way segment. Great show by great people. You get that they are close friends and that they have podcast about something they’ve been doing for years privately and sharing it wit an audience. Johnnys Game is brilliant. Thank you guys

    Really Great!
Great improv scenes! Great comedian guests! I love Johnny’s Game! One time I was on a walk listening to the podcast, and I saw a UFO sort of hovering over the beach, and then I looked again, and it was gone!

    Great weight loss podcast
This podcast in no way claims to be a health podcast, however it has inadvertently inspired me to get back into shape. Thank you Tony and Johnny. I like you guys and your podcast is funny.

Tony and Johnny are good boys
I’m writing the paragraph review as Tony instructed. I am absolutely in comedy nirvana with their particular type of improv humor containing sci-fi, time travel, alternate dimensions, and conspiracy theories. The Star Trek episode was just way too much, I couldn’t stop laughing. Please keep making these episodes! Here are your compliments: Tony- the BEST layered audio. Can tell you’re putting in a ton of work and creativity, I get absorbed into the scenes with that audio. Johnny- I love that you’re a sweet little mother, how angry Johnny’s game makes Tony, and your songs are freaking hilarious. We love you, bye!

    Oooh baby what a show
A very fun show with great improv and interviews. I appreciate the extra effort to add sound effects to the improv. It makes all those other improv podcasts seem lazy. Johnny’s Game is a roller coaster ride to listen to. Would love a full length Slater and Doubtfire episode.
