Parenting is a Joke

148

You know when you talk to your friends about your childhood and end it by saying, "But look at us, we're fine!" Here's my question: Are we fine? Because we're sitting here doused in CBD oil under a weighted blanket recording a podcast called Parenting is a Joke. Each week, host and standup Ophira Eisenberg talks to a different comedian about their career and their kids. Conversations tackle the tooth fairy, eating sticks, summer camp anxiety, the hidden horrors of childbirth, and the obvious horrors of our own childhoods. We celebrate the absurdity of shuffling a career with raising a kid, and highlight less traditional parenthood journeys, all while relishing in the fact that no one knows what they're doing, but we're all trying! Sometimes even our best. New episodes every Tuesday. New Season October 1st.

Truly funny and smart takes on parenting
This show is the conversation you have about parenting with your best friends if your best friends were completely honest and hilarious, and not always thinking about how to make themselves look like perfect parents. It also introduces you to comedians who are very seasoned and sometimes superstars and sometimes less known, but always funny, definitely a stress reliever for any stressed out parent… And honestly, who isn’t a stressed out parent at least some of the time? A find and not your usual parenting podcast you will learn a lot because even though these people are funny, they are also very wise — by being parents these comedians who might’ve been totally solipsistic— have to stop thinking about themselves only… and it’s kind of, cool as they face the ultimate hecklers everyday… their own kids!

It’s so great to hear others’ perspectives on parenting and their experiences with young or grown children. Ophira does an amazing podcast highlighting the fun, the heartache and the outrageous stories in the most difficult and rewarding job ever - Parenting!!

    Found my people
I have only listened to a handful of these, so far, but already know that these are my people. Parenting is absurd and I love a chance to laugh about it.

    This brooklyn mom is obsessed
I first watched Ophira Eisenberg perform when she hosted a well-known storytelling podcast live in Brooklyn Heights in 2016. It was her first public appearance after having her son, and at the time I was pregnant with my first daughter. Fast forward six years, and I stumbled upon this gem of a podcast. This is the most relatable piece of motherhood material. For all of the parents wondering what they should be listening to, this is it.

So great to hear Ophira again!
I was so happy to hear Ophira out of my podcast app again! I’ve been missing Ask Me Another, and this is the perfect new podcast, especially as a new parent! Here’s hoping for season 2 and many more to follow!!

    So thankful for this show!
I was absolutely delighted to learn that Ophira has a new podcast, and that it’s about parenting! As a performing artist (orchestral musician), it’s so refreshing to hear from a host with a non-traditional career and work schedule. I get a whole lot of side-eye from the other parents in my life for having to work evenings and weekends and therefore (gasp!) occasionally missing soccer games or needing to find a ride home for my munchkins, but I know Ophira gets me. Love the games, interviews, and updates from her home life. Please keep the episodes coming- they bring so much validation and comfort, in addition to much-needed laughs and entertainment!

    More Ophira!!
This podcast is a welcome pleasure. I have missed Her Ripe Begonias and love hearing her voice. Ophira is like a great sister whose got great advice and makes you laugh.

Finally, combining the best things ever - truly hilarious people and parenting! I’ve been dying for this since I started binging podcasts while breastfeeding my first kiddo 5 years ago. Thank you for making this. It’s incredibly funny and totally cathartic!

    Good podcast. Too many adds
I’m halfway to work on my commute by the time the podcast starts. Guess I can pay more for add free but not interested enough to do so
  • SusanHerschell
    LOL!!
Wait! Is “LOL” still cool ? If you’re questioning this like I am, then Parenting Is A Joke is made for you. Ophira is a delight and if you plan to listen in public spaces, I warn you in advance of the awkward stares as you LOL your way through each episode. Yes, Ophira, my breast pump spoke to me too!! I think I paid extra for that feature!

    New mom over here.
Ask Me Another and The Moth used to make my commutes enjoyable. I love Ophira's vibe, so ever since finding about this podcast on Twitter I've been catching up and very excited about this project. Seven months into this roller coaster of an adventure that is parenting, humor definitely keeps me going because parenting is not a joke but we have to make it one because that's the way.

    1450 stars!!!!
If you didn’t tell me this was a parenting podcast I’d just think it was a sharp, laugh-packed set of interviews with people who touch upon parenting in the most human way. Ophira is THE host with the most.

    Love!
The most relatable content for this mama of a 4 year old son and 2.5 year old daughter.

    I feel seen
Tongue in cheek but also not. It’s true! Plus comedians making me laugh through it is the mental health solution this crisis needs.
  • no, you make a nickname
    Great
Surprisingly honest stories from Ophira and her guests. Oh yeah, Funny, too.

    I’m obsessed

So glad to find Ophira again
I still listen to old Ask Me Another episodes, and I am delighted to find Ophira doing this new podcast, especially because there are parallels between her parenting journey and my daughter and son-in-law’s. I firmly believe humor is a key ingredient to successful parenting.

    Digging this one!
Fun insights into parenting, really loved the incorporation of segments with actual (yet entertaining!) experts, pretty decent warmup games.

    Please discontinue Emily Oster
I enjoy the pod - but please discontinue featuring Emily Oster. She did tremendous damage at the start of the pandemic by minimizing the harms. Please don’t give her a platform.
  • lah_pgh
    Great podcast
As an older new mom, the stories Ophira tells about her own journey to motherhood make me feel seen. I love the candor and the humor of this podcast. I look forward to it every week!

Currently Listening While Potty Training My Toddler
Great conversations and insights with some really creative and talented people! It’s sometimes hard to get started because I’m exhausted by my kids by the time I leave for work, and I don’t want to think about them for 10 minutes. But every time I listening, I’m loving it! Also… it is really well produced!!

I had a lengthy and intricate review and my phone ate it.
See above. You’ll like this podcasts, just freaking listen.

    Your perseverance is amazing
Ophira After listening this morning to your story..look at you. I was so taken back by your amazing journey! Don’t ever think you can’t do it, cause you have just proven it can be done! BTW, every time I hear you laugh, you make me laugh!

    Parenting is a Joke
Love Ophira’s new podcast #ParentingIsAJoke, it’s as hilarious as it is insightful! Give it a listen even if you don’t have kids, after all we all have parents & we were once children!
  • Pomoboy
All the heart and wit you could ask for
Ophira tackles the good the bad and the funny as only she can. I have been a long time fan of Tell me Another on NPR and it is great to see her back in podcast land.

    Content I Needed
I am expecting my first child in a couple months and have been looking for ways to add more mom content to my life. I read Jessi Kleins book early in my pregnancy and found like I found my people. I’ve been struggling to feel so seen until now. Listening to the first few episodes, I know I am going to be a loyal listener as I start to relate more and more to the laughable joke that is parenthood.
  • Kberg68
    Fun and thoughtful
Loved Ophira on NPR, have gotten to know her on Pete Dominic’s pod, so had to check this out. 2 episodes in on my drive home today and I’m hooked. Can’t wait to hear Roy Wood Jr, yea I’m outta order. It’s great to hear real people talk about work n kids in a real way, normalizing the fact that it’s not all fun n games. So for parents, you’re not alone, for those that don’t have kids, you’ll find out what your really NOT missing, and those thinking about it, a lot more to think about.
  • TJfraggle
    So Relatable
Not your average mom podcast. Thank god. Finally something that talks about what it’s like to be a person who just happens to also have a child or children. Look forward to this every week and wish it was longer!

So excited for this new podcast!!!!!
  • Bart Ranger
    Congratulations Ophira!
Congratulations on starting your podcast. I was an avid listener of your previous show and was heartbroken to see it go. Knowing how extraordinarily talented you were I knew it was only a matter of time before you got something just as amazing. I watched your comedy stand up special done in your unique style. I’m happy I’d be able to stay in touch with your wicked sense of humor on this show
